The carving stands roughly 22 feet tall and has been painted with bright colors. It was done to honor Chief Wagmong, who was the leader of a tribe of Seneca people when the first white settlers arrived in Ohio from Connecticut. Chief Wagmong established peaceful relations with the new settlers, and even prevented a massacre of white American settlers during the War of 1812. Title A name given to the resource The Sheridan Monument Description An account of the resource A monument to General Phillip Henry Sheridan who was raised in Somerset, Ohio. He was best known for his involvement at the Battle of Cedar Creek in the Civil War. The bronze sculpture depicts Sheridan's famous ride to Winchester, placing him on a rearing horse, waving his hat in the air. At the time, it was the only Civil War equestrian statue in the state of Ohio. The granite base contains dedicatory inscriptions. In 2018, his niece, Nellie Sheridan Wilson, a notable figure in her own right, finally received her own statue (OOS Item #1903), directly behind him, outside of the former post office where she served as postmistress. She and her sister, Mary, had spearheaded the drive to create and place the statue of General Sheridan in Somerset in 1905, and Sheridan Wilson was directly responsible for the creation of the penny fund to pay for the granite base. General Sheridan's monument sits in the middle of a traffic circle in Somerset Square, right in front of the Perry County Courthouse. It's a very busy intersection, making a close-up visit to the statue difficult. There are several parking spots scattered in the corners of the square and along neighboring streets. It is comprised a long, short wall with small metal emblems embedded at the base. In the center of the wall is a stone podium with a plaque on the front. Title A name given to the resource Spirit of the American Doughboy Description An account of the resource This monument depicts a World War I soldier striding forward holding a rifle at waist-height in his proper left hand with a grenade help high above his head in his proper right hand. The statue once stood on the grounds of the old Fostoria High School where it was dedicated November 11, 1927. In 1969, the Doughboy and its pedestal were moved by moving contractor Ludwig Berwick to Fountain Cemetery and placed inside a circular stone area containing flowers. Damages were repaired, the bayonet was replaced, and the Doughboy was rededicated May 30, 1969. The Doughboy received reasonable maintenance at the cemetery, but the years of exposure to the elements took their toll and a major restoration fundraising campaign was undertaken in 1995 to obtain donations of citizens and of Veteran, Fraternal Civic and other organizations. The restoration was performed under the supervision of Tom Podner, McKay Lodge Fine Arts Conservation Laboratory, Oberlin, Ohio. The sculpture was re-dedicated on November 11, 1996. One of the highlights of the restoration project was the participation of Albert Thomas, who had served in the European trenches during the war, and was Fostoria’s only surviving World War veteran. He was 100 years old at the time he attended the re-dedication. He had served at Chateau-Thierry France, near Ypres, Belgium, and in the Battle of the Argonne Forest. Viquesney Doughboy depicts a WWI soldier gallantly striding forward with a rifle held low in his proper left hand and a grenade raised high above his head in his proper right hand. This monument is the only WWI memorial one presented to an American town by a foreign government. It was a gift of the French people in recognition of the proportionately high number from Swanton who gave their lives (12 of the 250 who served). The Doughboy’s rifle was removed in 1983 after continuous vandalism. After the statue was restored in 2015 the gun was replaced. A coat of gold paint was applied at that time of original installation, but after most of it had worn away the rest of the paint was removed during restoration. The restoration took place by Georgio Gikas of Venus Bronze Works, Detroit, MI. The cannon on a base in front of the Doughboy is a captured German World War mortar that was a gift of the U. S. government prior to the Doughboy’s arrival. The relief sculpture is shaped like a head stone and depicts a simple map of Vietnam with a rifle puncturing the land mass at the barrel with a helmet resting on the gun's stock. It is accompanied by an eternal flame between two pairs of shoes enclosed in a cage that sits in front of the inscribed memorial. The purpose of this sculpture is to honor the fallen American soldiers who served in the Vietnam War. Title A name given to the resource Trumbull County World War II Memorial Description An account of the resource Located in Trumbull County's Veteran Park, this sculpture was a new edition in 2008 to honor the American service members of World War II. It was built by volunteers from local building trade organizations with monetary donations from local businesses, organizations and residents. The soldier shown is in an aimed position with his knees slightly bent. He is holding a rifle with his proper right hand supporting the stock and his proper left arm steadying the barrel.
