Title A name given to the resource Astrolabe Rotunda Description An account of the resource A stainless steel sculpture depicting an astrolabe, a device used by ancient Egyptians and Greeks in timetelling and navigation, atop a rotunda featuring the 12 astrological symbols of the year and the four compass points. The latitude of central Ohio was used to determine the angle of the axis of the astrolabe. The shadows from the central gnomon are cast on the dial marks of the outer ring. Designed by New York artist Alvin Scher, the sculpture was originally constructed by OWU assistant professor of fine arts Jonathan Quick for a temporary exhibit on the JAYwalk part of Ohio Wesleyan's campus in 1996 before being moved to a public Plaza in New York in the spring of 1997. Title A name given to the resource Noah's Ark: Life Source Description An account of the resource “Noah’s Ark: Life Source” is a steel sculpture by Charles McGee. This piece is inspired by the quote, “big is the head that thinks and drinks deep from the spigot of eternal knowledge and quenches the thirst of inquisitive minds with life sustaining freshwater.” The final stop on this tour is a bit farther from the others, however its message functions as an important conclusion to the tour. “Noah’s Ark: Life Source” encourages curiosity and a continuing desire to learn more about our world and others who share it. As McGee explains, his art is about “the power of togetherness. It’s all connected just like we are all connected.” This statement embodies the very hope for this tour; to bring people together and connect them by crossing the bridge of communication and culture. Charles McGee is a Detroit native. He is known for charcoal drawings, paintings, photography, sculptural works and large scale murals which explore the Black experience and his love of nature. While his work varies in style and medium, his commitment to bringing energy and life to a space through all of his pieces is consistent. Throughout his career, he has become a major figure in the Detroit art community. In 1969, McGee put together the first show of all Black artists in Detroit. He and other Black creators were fenced out of the mainstream galleries, so he founded Gallery 7 as a place to promote Black artists and serve as a forum for art in his neighborhood. McGee realized his passion for teaching young artists at his gallery and he formed his own school that offered free art lessons to kids in the community. He taught many of these lessons outside of the classroom and he encouraged his students to collect things from outside and bring them to the studio. As McGee explains, “I wanted the children to learn that art is everything and everything is art.” He went on to teach at Eastern Michigan University and subsequently became the director of the university’s Sill Gallery. His work can be seen both regionally and nationally and his actions are known to have significantly influenced the Detroit arts community and contributed even more generally to the broadening inclusivity of American art in the late-20th century. Title A name given to the resource Maya Description An account of the resource A galvanized steel sculpture, chosen out of 10 submissions to stand on the Quigley circle roundabout. The sculpture depicts the hand of the Hindu Lakshmi rising out of a lotus flower. <br /><br />The goddess Lakshmi is believed to be the most beautiful in the Hindu pantheon. The goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperty, the presence of her image is often related with established success or hope for future success. She is often depicted with a lotus flower, which is a symbol of purity and perseverance because its beautiful blooms are unstained by the muddy waters in which it tends to grow. Erected prominently off the exit of a major freeway, Maya alludes to Cleveland's past fortune to inspire hope for some sort of renaissance. Murphy's use of galvanized steel hearkens to the city's once-prosperous steel industry whose booming furnaces once roared where the neighborhood of Tremont now stands. In more ways than one, Cleveland today is akin to the lotus flower. Having risen from the muddy waters that were the decline of the steel industry and ensuing spikes in poverty and degredeation, the flower is now beginning to bloom once again, as Cleveland experiences a sort of rejuvenation. Murphy expertly makes full use of relationship between the location of the sculpture and the images he chose to incorporate.<br /><br />The true impact of much of Murphy's work is only revealed from a certain angle. Pieces like his <a href="http://oosi.sculpturecenter.org/items/show/1301">Stephanie Tubbs Jones</a> in Cleveland are only recognizable as representative art pieces from straight on. This is true of "Maya" as well. Situated on a roundabout, drivers are not simply <em>able</em> to circumnavigate the sculpture-- it is an action that is both implied and necessary.
