Artist Patrick Dougherty is best known for his larger than life pieces he calls “stickwork” rather than artwork. Since beginning his career as an artist in the early 1980’s, he has created over 300 pieces that have been shown internationally. He developed his career as an artist by engaging his background in carpentry and love of nature by learning about primitive building techniques and experimenting with tree saplings as a construction material.

His early work was limited in size, however he quickly built installations on a monumental scale made with truckloads of saplings. "Far Flung" is one of his massive stickworks. Explore the whimsical world Dougherty has created of natural weaving tunnel-like structures outside of the Taft Museum of Art.

The work was dismantled and removed in 2020, and the willow from the original work has been repurposed to create a new work at the Imago Earth Center.</text>

<text>This sculpture was given to the Valley Forge High School as a gift from the class of 1965. It is believed that it was created by the art students of that class, but that information is currently unconfirmed. In those years, the courtyard where it was placed was open to the students before school, at lunch, and after school. It was made of a material that was predominately cement aggregate. Over the years it began to spall and fracture and in either the very late 80’s or early 90’s, it had deteriorated to the point that, as a safety issue, it was decided that it had to be removed except for the original pedestal. In 2015 at their 50th reunion, the class of 1965 raised money for a sundial to be placed on the original pedestal for display. --Information provided by Rick Meeks, President of the Valley Forge Alumni Association (class of '73.)</text>

<text>Robert Smithson, famous land artist behind the Spiral Jetty among other things, came to Kent State University with the intent of creating another one of his "Flow" pieces, where he would let a substance flow down a hill to create a naturally formed earthwork sculpture. Unfortunately, the frigid January weather prevented his intended material, mud, from flowing at all, so Smithson had another idea. He decided to create a piece that demonstrated entropy, or the inevitable decline into disorder that everything will experience eventually. To achieve this end, Smithson ordered an abandoned woodshed on the campus to be buried with tons of dirt until the center beam cracked, ensuring it would collapse. He then asked that it never be interacted with again. His instructions to the caretakers of the piece at Kent State were clear: maintenance of the piece consists of performing no maintenance whatsoever on the piece. Allow the world to destroy and overtake the piece as it would like.

Only a few months after the piece was erected, the Kent State Massacre occurred, and the woodshed was subsequently marked with the date "May 4, Kent 70" linking the shed to that fateful day. The shed was set on fire a few years later by an arsonist and then the University planted a grove of trees around it to prevent passersby from seeing it. In 1984, by an unknown party, the Woodshed was completely torn down to its concrete foundations, which still stand today.

Smithson's Partially Buried Woodshed is an important piece in his own oeuvre, but also in the progression of the Land Art psuedo-movement. Questions arise around whether the Partially Buried Woodshed accomplished its task of demonstrating entropy, or whether that idea was ruined by human intervention. Smithson never got to speak at length on the matter due to his premature death in a plane crash in 1973.</text>

<text>In 1898, to the patriotic glee of 40,000, the city of Cleveland ceremoniously unveiled its new Chamber of Commerce Building. And there to greet the cheering masses and decorated soldiers were 4 granite eagles, masterfully carved by Joseph Carabelli. Carabelli was an Italian immigrant who settled in Little Italy and started the Lakeview Monumental Co. where he carved many of the magnificent headstones in Lakeview cemetery. His marble cutting and granite carving abilities were peerless, as is apparent when looking at the grand eagles. Their noble faces peer off to either side. Their features are strong but not heavy-- rather, they are valiant and graceful. Each eagle's strong brow gives it an air of vigilance and gravity, while their cascading feathers are a reflection of the grandeur they once protected: the Chamber of Commerce Building.

The building, at the time of its construction, was lauded as "magnificent" and "rich in detail", adorned with caryatid columns and tall, arched windows. The eagles were originally perched on a low wall that ran along the edifice of the building, but in 1955 they were removed, as a result of the buildings demolition. The 2 eagles, after standing outside a private farm in Geauga Township, are now on sale as of January 23, 2018. Cleveland City Hall "is aware of them and longs for their majestic return to the area."</text>

<text>By the end of the 19th c., Wade Park, owned then by the wealthy Jeptha Wade, was a hub of culture and community. The vast gardens and zoo exhibits that dotted the park brought visitors far and wide. Picnic areas, walking trails, a restaurant, the zoo, and a boathouse on the lovely lagoon kept the park abuzz at all times of the year. Visitors would canoe on the lagoon in the summer and skate in the winter; a shockingly peaceful contrast in activity to the violent fountain at the center of the lagoon.

The marble fountain, which cost $1500 to install onto it's $500 base inscribed with the name W. Morse, who oversaw the installation, depicts a bold and brave centaur who has been fatefully lured to a siren's rock by her sweet song. Unfortunately for him, as soon as he climbed atop the rock he was entwined by a wretched serpent. With one hand, he grasps the serpent's neck and squeezes, forcing a jet of mist 50 feet into the air from the it's mouth. From the water on the centaur's proper right, a merman sounds a conch shell in order to draw aid for the centaur, and who should respond but a saurian: a dolphin creature with the ability to kill a sea serpent in one bite!

The frantic drama preserved in the sculpture was a definite juxtaposition to the peaceable boating and picnicking that went on around it. The sculpture is reportedly a duplicate of one that Jeptha Wade saw over the course of his travels in Austria. By 1926, the statue had fallen into disrepair and disuse. The growing costs of upkeep and the costs associated with the new art museum precluded any attempts at restoration, and the statue was taken down.</text>

<text>The Politician: A Toy is not subtle about its statement. Meant to represent the elected officials of the United States, the Toy is cartoonish, juvenile, and obnoxious. The wide mouth with sharp, cutting teeth opens and closes incrementally; the wheels turn day and night but don't take anything anywhere; and the eyes are two TV's displaying static. Sparkly, wavy strands of thinning hair complement perfectly the clownish polka dot bow tie. The massive Cedarwood handle on the front seems to shamelessly imply that the politicians can be lead by anyone with a big enough hand, and the broom that drags behind it conveniently sweeps up any messes left in its trail. In short: the politician is effectively all talk and no walk.

Michael R. White, the Mayor of Cleveland at the time of The Politician's creation, was famously opposed to its installation saying, "I've seen it, and I don't like it... " Which may be a sign that the piece is effective.

In 2019 a controversy arose around the artist's desire to periodically place messages on the sculpture's surrounding fence, one of which -- thought to be about President Trump -- led to a lawsuit which was settled by the sculpture being slated for removal by July 24th. https://www.ideastream.org/news/controversial-cleveland-sculpture-moves-again-after-lawsuit It was subsequently removed to the artist's studio.
