Constructed using 1,750 bricks, they adorn two of the walls that surrounds the large generator that serves the nearby South Green residence halls and Student Living Learning center. The structure can be found off of South Green Drive, next to Adams Hall. The south side relief measures 16’4” x 8’8” while the east side piece is 28’8” x 8’8”. The pieces were designed by retired OU employee, Tad Gallaugher, and chiseled and carved by Brad and Tammy Spencer. (Credit on the plaque is given to Brad only, but the video of the construction shows both spouses working on the reliefs.) This work honors the history of the "South Bridge" and Athens. It depicts the Hocking River, which once flowed under the bridge prior to rechanneling in the 1960s and 70s, the 1870 bridge that was the first incarnation of five, local wildlife including species that are now endangered, and the Athens Asylum, now called The Ridges. One relief shows a muscular man in short sleeves and work boots holding a book in his left hand and reaching up toward a sun-like cross with his right. Title A name given to the resource Brodbeck Performance Park Description An account of the resource The City of Westwood, Ohio held a competition for a public performance area in the center of town. It was to honor Robert J. Brodbeck who died in 1987. Brodbeck was a long time Westwood volunteer and activist. A one-quarter acre site was made available for that purpose. Landscaping and a sculpture were to be designed to allow for various outdoor public performances and activities. Artist Gene Kangas was selected to design the environment, which consisted of sod-covered earth mounds, trees and cast cement walls and stages. An ancient Native American "mound builders" concept was developed that related to Southwestern Ohio’s historic and prehistoric past. The mounds formed the basis for a flexible contemporary, multi-stage, multi-purpose and relatively maintenance free environment. In addition to the cement and earth mounds, fossil symbols, animal images and tracks appeared in surrounding cast cement pictographs. Three circular stages of graduated sizes formed focal points within interlocking circles. Each raised stage was encircled by an elevated grass covered earth mound, creating a visitor’s "theater-in-the-round." Current plans in 2018 are to redevelop the site into a larger public area. Therefore, the public performance park honoring Robert Brodbeck will no longer exist. Politics change. The sculpture memorializes the fallen Union men of the Civil War and depicts three military men: one at the top and two on either side. The soldier atop the long column holds a flag upright in his proper left hand and begins to unsheathe his sword with his proper right hand from his left hip. The soldier to the right of the column stand in a relaxed contrapposto stance with his proper left hand on his hip. The soldier to the left of the column stands straight with both hands resting on the barrel of his upward-pointing gun. Each of the four sides of the sculpture feature relief carvings of the following text: Front: Dedicated July 4th 1890. To the men of Warren who fought to conquer the Rebellion and preserve the Union of the states. This monument is erected that their example may speak to coming generations. Title A name given to the resource Crystal Lake Park Description An account of the resource An earthworks piece devised by Brinsley Tyrrell that consists of monolithic carved sandstone blocks, piles of arranged stones, trees, and wildflowers on the bank of the Crystal Lake. He was assisted by a landscape architect in implementing each element in a manner that made sense. The large sandstone block that is embedded in the landscape is titled "Break the Crane Rock" because it broke the crane that was placing it during installation with its weight, and the snake bench right on the bank is called so because of the carved snake that wraps around the length of the stone. An often overlooked part of this piece is that it is much more than just the carved and stacked stones. Tyrrell worked on the entire space, including planting a patch wildflowers on the prairie bank (now overrun with weeds), and several trees around the area.
