In 2017 the centennial of Charles E. Burchfield’s Golden Year of creativity was celebrated in his hometown of Salem, Ohio. This mural was part of the celebration. The 70-foot long by 8-foot high mural is now part of the downtown scenery and reaches across 100 years to Burchfield’s “Golden Year.” The mural displays 15 of Burchfield’s paintings along with recognizing the Salem Public Library’s current remodeling and what the future may hold for the property behind the mural. MACGAHAN, 1844 - 1878, CHAMPION OF BULGARIAN FREEDOM." His notepad appears to have some possible letters carved into it, as well as "1982," presumably the year Lubomir Daltchev, a Bulgarian-American sculptor, created the statue. The man depicted, Januarius Aloysius MacGahan, was a war correspondent, born to Irish immigrant parents in New Lexington, Ohio, where his statue now stands. He was mentored in his youth by General Philip Sheridan, also a son of Perry County, who has his own statue 8 miles away in Somerset. MacGahan's graphic reports in 1876 of the massacre of Bulgarians by the Ottoman Turks created massive public outrage throughout the world. When the Turks turned to Britain, their traditional ally, for help at an impending Russian invasion, Britain refused to intervene, due to the intense opposition of their citizens in the wake of MacGahan's reporting. The ensuing Russo-Turkish War resulted in the defeat of the Ottoman Turks and their five-century rule over Bulgaria. Bulgaria became an autonomous state following the war. In 1878, three months after the war ended, MacGahan died from typhoid fever in Constantinople. He is celebrated by Bulgarians for his role in keeping the British out of the war, and his writing and accomplishments were well-known to Americans at the time as well, as they had also been horrified by the atrocities he wrote about. Now, however, his name and his impact are almost completely unknown in America. There is a society in his name, the MacGahan American Bulgarian Foundation, that holds an annual MacGahan festival in New Lexington and helps honor his legacy. The statue is located in Doobie Park, at the intersection of Main St and Brown St, across from the Perry County Courthouse. Damages were repaired, the bayonet was replaced, and the Doughboy was rededicated May 30, 1969. The Doughboy received reasonable maintenance at the cemetery, but the years of exposure to the elements took their toll and a major restoration fundraising campaign was undertaken in 1995 to obtain donations of citizens and of Veteran, Fraternal Civic and other organizations. The restoration was performed under the supervision of Tom Podner, McKay Lodge Fine Arts Conservation Laboratory, Oberlin, Ohio. The sculpture was re-dedicated on November 11, 1996. One of the highlights of the restoration project was the participation of Albert Thomas, who had served in the European trenches during the war, and was Fostoria’s only surviving World War veteran. He was 100 years old at the time he attended the re-dedication. He had served at Chateau-Thierry France, near Ypres, Belgium, and in the Battle of the Argonne Forest. Viquesney Doughboy depicts a WWI soldier gallantly striding forward with a rifle held low in his proper left hand and a grenade raised high above his head in his proper right hand. This monument is the only WWI memorial one presented to an American town by a foreign government. It was a gift of the French people in recognition of the proportionately high number from Swanton who gave their lives (12 of the 250 who served). The Doughboy’s rifle was removed in 1983 after continuous vandalism. After the statue was restored in 2015 the gun was replaced. A coat of gold paint was applied at that time of original installation, but after most of it had worn away the rest of the paint was removed during restoration. The restoration took place by Georgio Gikas of Venus Bronze Works, Detroit, MI. The cannon on a base in front of the Doughboy is a captured German World War mortar that was a gift of the U. S. government prior to the Doughboy’s arrival. Dillard is a Cleveland native and Baldwin Wallace University alumnus. Dillard is represented at the peak of his jump over a hurdle. His trailing leg is high enough in the air to clear the hurdle, which, according to his daughter, is a part of the sport that Dillard was very particular about when he coached her as a little girl. In addition to being a decorated athlete, he also served with Buffalo Soldiers during the Second World War. After retiring from sports, Dillard continued to work in Cleveland for the Indians as a PR manager, and for the Public School District. In creating this statue, Deming was tempted to include dimes on the frame of the hurdle because of an anecdote Dillard told him. Dillard said he used to practice the event with dimes flat on top of the hurdle, and his goal was to knock the dimes off without knocking the hurdle over. He wanted to develop the most efficient jump possible, and judging by his 2 hurdling gold medals, he succeeded. But because of the statue's location on a college campus, surrounded by mischievous students in search of money, Deming elected not to include this small detail. However, a detail he did include (albeit coincidentally) is that the bronze statue weighs exactly as much as Harrison Dillard did while he was racing in 1949: 152 lbs. The figure of Jesse stands on the first place spot in full running attire. The other two positions on the podium bear his footprints, reminding the viewer that even he once stood behind the victor. It was through hard work, determination, and a constant competition with himself that he managed to climb to the highest position on the podium. Jesse Owens is one of the greatest athletes of the twentieth century. Apart from winning four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games in Nazi Germany, he is also known for breaking three world records and tying one in the span of 45 minutes at a Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor in 1935. Title A name given to the resource Jim Brown Description An account of the resource Statue to one of the Cleveland Browns' greatest players and one of the most legendary athletes in Cleveland history. His bronze likeness captures him in a decisive moment: is Brown going to continue trucking forward, through the defense? Or is his foot planted and prepared to execute a deadly dodge that will leave the defense in the dust and 6 more points on the scoreboard? His speed, alacrity, and strength on the field are all captured expertly by Deming. His body leans over to the right, gently cradling the ball in his left hand, but ready to club through steel with his right. Brown's back foot is completely vertical, indicating his speed and explosiveness, and the the other foot dangles off the edge of the base, as if even the sculpture is careening down the field and the sculptor could barely contain it. Deming made sure to capture every part of detail of Brown, down to his custom widened helmet, and the exact shoes he wore during the 1964-65 season. Deming approached Jim Brown himself before beginning work on the statue, trying to ascertain what Brown wanted people to see when they saw his statue. Brown answered with one word: Determination. Brown didn't want to be seen as graceful or elegant or victorious, he wanted to people to see the statue and instantly that he was a tough-as-nails, determined team player. When Deming brought Brown to his studio to give the go ahead on the clay sculpt, Brown stated only one change: "Make my calves bigger." Jim Brown was the star running back from 1957 to 1965. He was a gifted athlete from the day he was drafted, and set numerous franchise and league records throughout his career. He is a 2-time MVP and a Hall of Famer. Jim Brown's must illustrious accomplishment, however, extends far beyond himself. He is largely responsible for the 1964 NFL championship that the Browns brought back home to Cleveland; a feat that would prove to be unrepeatable in the city for 52 long, heartbreaking years. Corrigan Memorial Description An account of the resource A Memorial statue to 35 year Cuyahoga County Prosecutor John T. Corrigan. Corrigan spent over 50 years of his 91 year life devoted to service of the American people and the people of Cleveland as a soldier, senator, and prosecutor. His statue wears a plain, American-cut business suit with a pocket square and full Windsor-knotted tie. Characteristically 50's thick frame glasses and a leather briefcase complete his professorial look. He stands, without a pedestal, two feet on the ground just like the viewer. His open mouth denotes that he is captured mid-sentence, and his mild-mannered gestures show his professional finesse. Corrigan was a World War II veteran who lost his right eye in the Battle of the Bulge. A graduate of St. Ignatius high school, John Carroll University, and Case Western Reserve University (all Cleveland schools) Corrigan devoted his entire life to the protection and safety of the public. Deming Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 2015 Description An account of the resource Doby's statue is outside the gates at Progressive Field. His bronze likeness has been captured in the middle of the most exhilarating moment in baseball: right after a home run. Doby's front foot is planted and prepared to launch him around the bases. His eyes are fixed on an imaginary first base, determined and focused. His hands, swung out to his right, are throwing the bat behind him. Doby is leaning forward, full tilt, and his feet are on the furthest edges of the base, ready to spring off at a moment's notice. Though he may be a statue, some people still feel like they're in danger of being knocked over when they're in his path. But the trails that Doby blazed weren't always just around the bases, in the record books, or on the stat sheets. Doby blazed the trail for integration on every front when he became the second Black player in the MLB, the first in the American League. He signed with the Cleveland Indians just three months after Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Then in 1948, Doby became the first Black player to ever hit a home run in the World Series, which would result in the Cleveland Indians most recent championship, as of 2017. It is hard enough to make it to the MLB as is, but to make it and thrive like Doby did in the face of so much resentment, so many obstacles, and such great odds, is truly a feat that no monument could ever conceivably do justice, but Deming's magnificent tribute to one of the most historic players of all time certainly comes close.
