Title A name given to the resource Januarius Aloysius MacGahan Description An account of the resource This statue is in honor of the "Liberator of Bulgaria," Januarius Aloysius MacGahan. It depicts MacGahan striding forward, seemingly staring at the 1887 Perry County Courthouse across the street. He holds a pen in one hand and a notepad in the other, with a crossbody satchel resting against his back. The stone he walks upon reads, "JANUARIUS A. MACGAHAN, 1844 - 1878, CHAMPION OF BULGARIAN FREEDOM." His notepad appears to have some possible letters carved into it, as well as "1982," presumably the year Lubomir Daltchev, a Bulgarian-American sculptor, created the statue. The man depicted, Januarius Aloysius MacGahan, was a war correspondent, born to Irish immigrant parents in New Lexington, Ohio, where his statue now stands. He was mentored in his youth by General Philip Sheridan, also a son of Perry County, who has his own statue 8 miles away in Somerset. MacGahan's graphic reports in 1876 of the massacre of Bulgarians by the Ottoman Turks created massive public outrage throughout the world. When the Turks turned to Britain, their traditional ally, for help at an impending Russian invasion, Britain refused to intervene, due to the intense opposition of their citizens in the wake of MacGahan's reporting. The ensuing Russo-Turkish War resulted in the defeat of the Ottoman Turks and their five-century rule over Bulgaria. Bulgaria became an autonomous state following the war. In 1878, three months after the war ended, MacGahan died from typhoid fever in Constantinople. He is celebrated by Bulgarians for his role in keeping the British out of the war, and his writing and accomplishments were well-known to Americans at the time as well, as they had also been horrified by the atrocities he wrote about. Now, however, his name and his impact are almost completely unknown in America. There is a society in his name, the MacGahan American Bulgarian Foundation, that holds an annual MacGahan festival in New Lexington and helps honor his legacy. The statue is located in Doobie Park, at the intersection of Main St and Brown St, across from the Perry County Courthouse. Title A name given to the resource Harrison Dillard Description An account of the resource A lifesize statue of 4-time Olympic gold medalist track athlete Harrison Dillard. Dillard is a Cleveland native and Baldwin Wallace University alumnus. Dillard is represented at the peak of his jump over a hurdle. His trailing leg is high enough in the air to clear the hurdle, which, according to his daughter, is a part of the sport that Dillard was very particular about when he coached her as a little girl. In addition to being a decorated athlete, he also served with Buffalo Soldiers during the Second World War. After retiring from sports, Dillard continued to work in Cleveland for the Indians as a PR manager, and for the Public School District. In creating this statue, Deming was tempted to include dimes on the frame of the hurdle because of an anecdote Dillard told him. Dillard said he used to practice the event with dimes flat on top of the hurdle, and his goal was to knock the dimes off without knocking the hurdle over. He wanted to develop the most efficient jump possible, and judging by his 2 hurdling gold medals, he succeeded. But because of the statue's location on a college campus, surrounded by mischievous students in search of money, Deming elected not to include this small detail. However, a detail he did include (albeit coincidentally) is that the bronze statue weighs exactly as much as Harrison Dillard did while he was racing in 1949: 152 lbs. It was through hard work, determination, and a constant competition with himself that he managed to climb to the highest position on the podium. Jesse Owens is one of the greatest athletes of the twentieth century. Apart from winning four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games in Nazi Germany, he is also known for breaking three world records and tying one in the span of 45 minutes at a Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor in 1935. Part of Owens' legacy supersedes sports as well. He is known for having upset Hitler by completely destroying the narrative of Aryan supremacy by being a black man accomplishing historic feats of athleticism right in the capital of Nazi Germany. His bronze likeness captures him in a decisive moment: is Brown going to continue trucking forward, through the defense? Or is his foot planted and prepared to execute a deadly dodge that will leave the defense in the dust and 6 more points on the scoreboard? His speed, alacrity, and strength on the field are all captured expertly by Deming. His body leans over to the right, gently cradling the ball in his left hand, but ready to club through steel with his right. Brown's back foot is completely vertical, indicating his speed and explosiveness, and the the other foot dangles off the edge of the base, as if even the sculpture is careening down the field and the sculptor could barely contain it. Deming made sure to capture every part of detail of Brown, down to his custom widened helmet, and the exact shoes he wore during the 1964-65 season. Deming approached Jim Brown himself before beginning work on the statue, trying to ascertain what Brown wanted people to see when they saw his statue. Brown answered with one word: Determination. Brown didn't want to be seen as graceful or elegant or victorious, he wanted to people to see the statue and instantly that he was a tough-as-nails, determined team player. When Deming brought Brown to his studio to give the go ahead on the clay sculpt, Brown stated only one change: "Make my calves bigger." Jim Brown was the star running back from 1957 to 1965. He was a gifted athlete from the day he was drafted, and set numerous franchise and league records throughout his career. He is a 2-time MVP and a Hall of Famer. Jim Brown's must illustrious accomplishment, however, extends far beyond himself. He is largely responsible for the 1964 NFL championship that the Browns brought back home to Cleveland; a feat that would prove to be unrepeatable in the city for 52 long, heartbreaking years. His bronze likeness has been captured in the middle of the most exhilarating moment in baseball: right after a home run. Doby's front foot is planted and prepared to launch him around the bases. His eyes are fixed on an imaginary first base, determined and focused. His hands, swung out to his right, are throwing the bat behind him. Doby is leaning forward, full tilt, and his feet are on the furthest edges of the base, ready to spring off at a moment's notice. Though he may be a statue, some people still feel like they're in danger of being knocked over when they're in his path. But the trails that Doby blazed weren't always just around the bases, in the record books, or on the stat sheets. Doby blazed the trail for integration on every front when he became the second Black player in the MLB, the first in the American League. He signed with the Cleveland Indians just three months after Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Then in 1948, Doby became the first Black player to ever hit a home run in the World Series, which would result in the Cleveland Indians most recent championship, as of 2017. It is hard enough to make it to the MLB as is, but to make it and thrive like Doby did in the face of so much resentment, so many obstacles, and such great odds, is truly a feat that no monument could ever conceivably do justice, but Deming's magnificent tribute to one of the most historic players of all time certainly comes close. His eyes are glued to the imaginary pitcher in front of him. Thome is prepared to whack anything that comes over the plate, out into Lake Erie. Represented in his signature stance, with his bat pointed to center field and his socks hiked up to his mid-shin, this is the Jim Thome of the 90's. Deming is very careful to capture these close details on an athlete's uniform because having been an athlete himself, he knows how intimately the players know their own uniforms. He knows how much of a difference it can make. Thome is standing strong, with a stance so wide his feet are barely on the base. He is balanced, sturdily built on top of himself from the tips of his cleats to the brim of his helmet. This statue is a triumphant recognition of the fact that even though Thome traveled around the MLB and wore many colors, numbers, and logos, he will always be a Cleveland Indian. Jim Thome was the Cleveland Indian's third baseman (and first baseman for one season) and a power hitter from 1991-2002, and one season in 2011. After being recruited from Cleveland's farm team in Charlotte, Thome quickly became one of the core members of the team throughout the 90's. He helped lead the Indians to the World Series against the Atlanta Braves in 1995, and then again in 1997 against the Marlins, where the team was met with a stinging Game 7 loss. Thome left the team in 2002 until 2011, when he made a triumphant return to play in Cleveland for one last season. He retired as the Indian's all time franchise leader in home runs and walks, the twenty-first player to record 50 home runs in a season, and as of 2017, the MLB player with most career walk off home runs. Thome is a central piece in the history of Cleveland sports, and he has been immortalized as such, forever ready for the next pitch. It is abruptly cut off at a 45 degree angle, leaving a sharp edge that gives the viewer a look at the pitch black inside of the hollow cylinder. The entire structure rises out of a 15 foot, circular pool that is filled with teal-tinged water. The water spills down the cobblestone slopes, over the identifying placard, and into a 25 foot circular drain that surrounds the entire fountain. The uneven edge of the cylinder seems to be pulling the structure up and away. This illusion is helped by the fact that the structure is suspended just above the water line, like a rocket just as it's taking off. The fountain was installed to commemorate work done by Case Western Reserve University researchers Albert Michelson and Edward Morley. The 1887 experiment was the first to debunk the then-popular theory that light needed a "luminiferous ether" to transmit its waves through space. So to symbolize this new groundbreaking step forward in relative physics, the water represents the ether, and the cylinder represents the beam of light. Title A name given to the resource Hart Crane Memorial Description An account of the resource The Hart Crane Memorial Sculpture is a unique contemporary monument and public park. This environmental 65-foot-long sculpture commemorates famed 20th century poet Hart Crane, who was born in Northeastern Ohio. Columbus Road Park is located along the Cuyahoga River, which flows directly into Lake Erie. It was redesigned specifically as a home for the Hart Crane Memorial Sculpture. A dominant theme of water and its sights and sounds occurs in Crane’s work. One of his most important poems is titled “The Bridge.” The multi-sectioned Memorial features a large arch or bridge accentuated with selected poetic phrases from Crane’s poetry that refer to water. His words touch on the lives and deaths of those who sailed the Great Lakes. A silhouette of the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald commemorates those lost at sea. The sculpture was commissioned by the Mildred Andrews Fund. This sculpture was originally intended to be installed in Brooklyn under the Brooklyn Bridge, a famous subject of Crane's. It was a pet project of Peter Putnam’s. Peter sent Gene Kangas reference material, a movie and books, to acquaint him with Crane. Unfortunately, Peter Putnam (the commissioner) was killed in a tragic traffic accident before the artwork could be completed. Kangas reached out to Putnam's attorneys in order to finalize Peter’s project and permanently place the work in Cleveland. Three massive curling blue pipes mimic the waves of Lake Erie, just a short distance to the North. These abstracted waves wind and undulate around a Corten steel arch and wedge, which feature the poetic phrases of Hart Crane. The massive arch firmly stands between looming turbulence and calm. It is a passageway connecting the past and future. Gene Kangas explained details about the fabrication of the piece. The ship’s profile was painted with authentic colors provided by the company that built the Edmund Fitzgerald (the Titanic of the Great Lakes that sunk in 1975). The rocking boat-like feature was based on blue-prints provided by the company. Three colors of blue cover sections of tubing. Gene indicated that the Corten pieces, embellished with Crane's words, have a clear and direct association with Crane. However, the winding, wavy forms of the tubes were inspired by Crane's whimsical, winding way of writing. Kangas wanted to reflect the character of Crane’s poetry. Crane’s words are the focal point through which each viewer enters the memorial. River traffic passes the sculpture each day. After 23 years, the sculpture was re-painted in 2018. Sherwin Williams graciously donated the best available commercial paint. The restoration was expertly done by volunteers of a Cleveland painter’s union. This was all accomplished with the direct consultation and supervision of the artist. Since the dedication in 1995, no signage was ever installed to inform visitors of the site’s name or purpose. The piece commemorates the benefactor of the Cleveland Mounted Police Unit, Hugh O'Neill. He was a decorated horseman with a knack for finding and breeding strong, successful horses. O'Neill supplied carriage horses and riding horses to presidents William McKinley, Warren Harding, and Woodrow Wilson. The hardworking Irish Immigrant found success in his horse business until the dawn of the automobile. Reluctantly, he entered the world of the motor vehicle, despite his detestation, and under the watchful eyes of his sons, the company became Leaseway Transportation Corp., a hugely successful trucking company. The Ohio state alumnus' sculpture bears the name of "OHIO" on the front of his jersey. He celebrates with his hands in the air in front of him. His eyes are closed, taking in the monumental victory. His lead foot is set on the tip of a gold pyramid, and his back foot is raised in the air behind him. Jesse Owens is one of the greatest athletes of the twentieth century. Apart from winning four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games in Nazi Germany, he is also known for breaking three world records and tying one in the span of 45 minutes at a Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor in 1935. Part of Owens' legacy supersedes sports as well. He is known for having upset Hitler by completely destroying the narrative of Aryan supremacy by being a black man accomplishing historic feats of athleticism right in the capital of Nazi Germany. Unfortunately in his lifetime, he was faced with nearly insurmountable opposition despite his success, being snubbed by both FDR and Hitler after his Olympic victories. Title A name given to the resource Bob Feller Statue Description An account of the resource Legendary pitcher, Bob Feller, in the midst of his distinct wind up, standing outside Progressive Field. Feller stands precariously on his right leg. His right arm bears the ball, palm up and stretched behind his back. The left side of his body floats in space in front of him, tingling with an energy from the pitch that is screaming to whip through the park. Feller's foot stands on a raised part of the pedestal that acts like an eternal pitcher's mound. The anticipation and the excited energy that this statue's posing bring to the viewer are indescribable. It's as if a sprinkle of dust, or a tap with a chisel would set Feller into motion and have him rip one last pitch through the city. Emblazoned on the pedestal is a remembrance of the man Feller was and his importance to the city. Bob Feller was an Iowa native who skipped the Minor Leagues and jumped directly from his High School to the Cleveland Indians at the age of 17. He still had to finish a year in school while pitching for the Indians. Feller threw every pitch of his career (including the second fastest ever recorded-- 107.9 mph!) in his #19 Indians jersey. He was also instrumental in defeating the Atlanta Braves in the 1948 World Series to bring the Cleveland Indians their first title since 1920, and still their last as of 2017. In addition to smashing long-standing records as a player, Feller continued in front office capacities after his retirement, totaling 70+ years working with the Cleveland Indians. Johnson sitting in a simple art nouveau armchair. In his right hand he holds a copy of Henry George's political philosophy tome "Progress and Poverty." His face, soft and friendly, hints of a smile. His left hand is curled over the knob of the chair's arm in a relaxed fashion. Both of his feet rest serenely on the base. This statue is a man at peace: a level-headed leader. He is a thinker and a planner, the great mind behind some critical decisions at a formative stage in Cleveland's history. Johnson was the mayor of Cleveland from 1901 to 1909. During that time he completely transformed the city into the industrial kingpin it was during the early 20th century. Lauded as a consummate "municipal technician" , Johnson paved hundreds of miles of new streets, installed new parks, built numerous public facilities, sporting centers, playgrounds, etc. He also began work on the West Side Market that still operates today as a landmark food market in the US. Johnson was instrumental in incorporating electricity, public transit, steel, and a number of other infrastructure items into the city's economy. Title A name given to the resource General Moses Cleaveland Description An account of the resource Portrait figure of General Moses Cleaveland, founder of the city of Cleveland. He stands in a classical stance with his left foot stepped forward. He bears a staff in his right hand, and in his left arm he cradles a surveyors tool. Cleaveland is wearing the clothes of an honorable, wealthy man. His gaze is analytic and professional, as if he is still surveying the land around him where a now-developed metropolitan hub of the Great Lakes bustles. Cleaveland was a surveyor, lawyer, soldier, and politician from Connecticut who ventured into Connecticut's Western Reserve (now North East Ohio). Cleaveland and his team landed at Settler's Landing in the Flats in 1796, and the city was founded shortly afterwards, with a grand total population of four. There is speculation about why the city dropped the letter "A" from Cleaveland's name. The most poplar theory is that the editor of the first newspaper in Cleveland, "The Cleveland Advertiser, realized that "Cleaveland Advertiser" was one character too long for the printing form. so he dropped the "A" to make room. The change stuck, and the rest is history. Cleaveland's statue was moved to line up with S. Ontario street during the 2016 renovations of Public Square. Description An account of the resource Full figure portrait of Bishop Louis Amadeus Rappe, first Roman Catholic Bishop of Cleveland. He is in full solemn pontifical dress: robes, miter, and crosier. He is delivering a blessing with his right hand. The heavy robes that furl around his shoulders and drape down to his feet feel grand and decadent, but not burdensome. His face is stern but friendly. Bishop Rappe made a point of interacting with his flock as a friend and father, rather than a superior and Serrao captures this warm paternal authority well in the rendering of his face and his open body posture. Born in Northern France and brought to the US to be the first Bishop of Cleveland, Rappe succeeded in growing his diocese and taking care of his children. What were 42 churches at the time of his consecration became 160 churches by the time he retired. He established religious orders, schools, and hospitals that all helped to cultivate the caring culture of an up and coming Cleveland. He is buried inside the cathedral his statue stands outside of. Rappe, however, is not the only groundbreaking figure involved in this statue. Sculptor Luella Varney Serrao, Class of 1884, was the first female sculptor to graduate from the Cleveland Institute of Art.
