The center portion of the memorial features four bronze plaques (two on the front, two on the back) with the names of the battles in which American forces participated in France (Argonne, Maine, Scoissons, and St. Mihiel). There are two additional bronze plaques (one on either side of the memorial) designed with an eagle and shield at the top and lists of the names of the Fayette County soldiers who died during the war. This memorial, dedicated on November 11, 1927, replaced a previous memorial arch that had originally been dedicated in 1919. The American Flag that flies above the monument appears to be held by the engraved soldiers, making the memorial a 3-D rendition of Joe Rosenthal's iconic photograph of U.S. Marines raising a flag above Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. The back, which was inscribed in 2018 by Robert Howard of Quality Monument Service, contains the names of local service members from the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II, who were not on the nearby memorial wall of 800 names. There are four pictures in a section called "The Four Chaplains," in honor of the service members who stayed behind on the sinking USAT Dorchester, which had been hit by a German torpedo, in order to allow others to survive. Title A name given to the resource The Spirit of the American Doughboy [Crooksville] Description An account of the resource One of many copies of Viquesney's 1920 "The Spirit of the American Doughboy," the statue depicts a World War I infantry man, stepping amongst tree stumps and barbed wire in "No Man's Land." He holds a grenade in his upwardly-extended right hand and a rifle with a bayonet in his left. A 1921 American Legion competition declared the bronze soldier's uniform and gear to be 100% accurate to that of actual Doughboys. The statue rests on a brick pedestal, with a bronze plaque on the front. Crooksville's statue is reported to have been the first Viquesney Doughboy in the state of Ohio. Title A name given to the resource Spirit of the American Doughboy Description An account of the resource This monument depicts a World War I soldier striding forward holding a rifle at waist-height in his proper left hand with a grenade help high above his head in his proper right hand. The statue once stood on the grounds of the old Fostoria High School where it was dedicated November 11, 1927. In 1969, the Doughboy and its pedestal were moved by moving contractor Ludwig Berwick to Fountain Cemetery and placed inside a circular stone area containing flowers. Damages were repaired, the bayonet was replaced, and the Doughboy was rededicated May 30, 1969. The Doughboy received reasonable maintenance at the cemetery, but the years of exposure to the elements took their toll and a major restoration fundraising campaign was undertaken in 1995 to obtain donations of citizens and of Veteran, Fraternal Civic and other organizations. The restoration was performed under the supervision of Tom Podner, McKay Lodge Fine Arts Conservation Laboratory, Oberlin, Ohio. The sculpture was re-dedicated on November 11, 1996. One of the highlights of the restoration project was the participation of Albert Thomas, who had served in the European trenches during the war, and was Fostoria’s only surviving World War veteran. He was 100 years old at the time he attended the re-dedication. He had served at Chateau-Thierry France, near Ypres, Belgium, and in the Battle of the Argonne Forest. Viquesney Doughboy depicts a WWI soldier gallantly striding forward with a rifle held low in his proper left hand and a grenade raised high above his head in his proper right hand. This monument is the only WWI memorial one presented to an American town by a foreign government. It was a gift of the French people in recognition of the proportionately high number from Swanton who gave their lives (12 of the 250 who served). The Doughboy’s rifle was removed in 1983 after continuous vandalism. After the statue was restored in 2015 the gun was replaced. A coat of gold paint was applied at that time of original installation, but after most of it had worn away the rest of the paint was removed during restoration. The restoration took place by Georgio Gikas of Venus Bronze Works, Detroit, MI. The cannon on a base in front of the Doughboy is a captured German World War mortar that was a gift of the U. S. government prior to the Doughboy’s arrival. Viquesney Doughboy was erected in Woodville in 1927 to commemorate the fallen American servicemen of World War I. The pressed copper Doughboy looks to be in a forward stride motion with a rifle carried low in his proper left hand while he reaches high holding a grenade in his proper right hand. The plaque inscription on the front of the tall base reads: TO COMMEMORATE THOSE WHO SERVED THE UNITED STATES IN THE WORLD WAR 1917 TO 1919 ---------------------- DEDICATED TO THE CLARENCE L. NIEMAN POST NO. 455 AMERICN LEGION WOODVILLE, OHIO SEPTEMBER 5, 1927 ----------------------- ERECTED BY THE EXCHANGE CLUB AND THE CITIZENS OF WOODVILLE While the plaque shows September 5, 1927, the monument was not formally dedicated until October 16, 1927. A plaque on the front ledge of the new base recognizes that the sculpture and park was re-dedicated on May 31, 1971, which is when the park was renamed from Waterworks Park to Veterans' Park. The Doughboy’s left hand once broke off and was reattached in about 1983, which may have been the last time any preservative/ restorative measures were taken.
