<text>By the end of the 19th c., Wade Park, owned then by the wealthy Jeptha Wade, was a hub of culture and community. The vast gardens and zoo exhibits that dotted the park brought visitors far and wide. Picnic areas, walking trails, a restaurant, the zoo, and a boathouse on the lovely lagoon kept the park abuzz at all times of the year. Visitors would canoe on the lagoon in the summer and skate in the winter; a shockingly peaceful contrast in activity to the violent fountain at the center of the lagoon.

The marble fountain, which cost $1500 to install onto it's $500 base inscribed with the name W. Morse, who oversaw the installation, depicts a bold and brave centaur who has been fatefully lured to a siren's rock by her sweet song. Unfortunately for him, as soon as he climbed atop the rock he was entwined by a wretched serpent. With one hand, he grasps the serpent's neck and squeezes, forcing a jet of mist 50 feet into the air from the it's mouth. From the water on the centaur's proper right, a merman sounds a conch shell in order to draw aid for the centaur, and who should respond but a saurian: a dolphin creature with the ability to kill a sea serpent in one bite!

The frantic drama preserved in the sculpture was a definite juxtaposition to the peaceable boating and picnicking that went on around it. The sculpture is reportedly a duplicate of one that Jeptha Wade saw over the course of his travels in Austria. By 1926, the statue had fallen into disrepair and disuse. The growing costs of upkeep and the costs associated with the new art museum precluded any attempts at restoration, and the statue was taken down.</text>

<text>A therapeutic space used by the Seidman Cancer Center at UH to help relieve patients of stress. After passing through the twisting. fantastical gates that lead into the space, one finds that the garden is centered around a large, intricate labyrinth, inlaid in the ground. Surrounding that, around the perimeter of the circular garden are a series of zen sculptures. Most of them represent one of the elements: Earth, Water, Wind, or Fire. Almost all of them are interactive, like the bench, hastily sculpted from a full rock. Others are kinetic, like the bright pink glass pinwheel about 25 feet in the air. Yet another piece is a metal bell that gently sounds with a mellow ring when gonged. The clever design leads the viewer peacefully around the space to experience everything there is to offer.

By leaving a gap between the two nearly-touching ends of the sculpture, McConnell creates an anticipatory, anxious energy. The viewer wishes to close off the piece and be left with a perfect teardrop shape. Instead McConnell leaves a painfully small space that is filled with that anxious energy from the viewer. That small gap tingles with the viewer's need for a perfect, continuous sculpture. Playing on natural human tendency proved to be an excellent way for McConnell to incorporate the viewer into his sculpture without a physical demand.</text>

The name "I-90" could potentially be a reference to the East-West highway that runs through Northeast Ohio and the longest Interstate highway in the US. The sheet is bent up at 90 degrees on either side, giving it the general appearance of a road with guard rails. Floyd is a known architect-sculptor who has a passionate devotion to environmental and ecological preservation., and perhaps this devotion manifests itself in I-90's installation. The brushed, black, almost mechanical piece rises out of a sea of colorful flowers. The abstracted roadway acts as an indelible, conspicuous stain on the natural beauty around it. </text>

<text>Abstract sculptor and Cleveland native Fred Schmidt was an industrial welder before he was an artist. After welding together some random metal shapes, he caught an inspired passion to create. Much of his work features twisting forms and dense horizontal volumes, but Galactic Spanner is much less.

Strikingly minimal for Schmidt, Galactic Spanner is just four, slightly curved bars of metal coming out of the ground. All of them curve in some way, and two of them intersect at a pointed angle. The minimal design in a piece named "Galactic Spanner" is interesting, especially because of how active his other pieces tend to be. </text>

<text>A painted steel structure. Straight, narrow bars rise out of the ground and converge into a dense mass of cut plates, slivers, and crumpled sheets, all of steel. Similar bars then shoot out of the top of the chaotic fray. Though this piece is non-representational (at least not implicitly so), there are a number of images that this piece calls to mind. The solid, straight offshoots entering and leaving the center mass are reminiscent of a prism refracting light, though in this case neither the "prism" nor the "beams" are clean nor precise. The other image that comes to mind is that of a campfire. The legs act as the tipi-stacked logs, with the "fire" in the center dancing and flickering about. Then the smoke is formed with the beams coming from the top.

Despite being both non-representational and non-geometric, this piece feels remarkably out of place within Schmidt's body of work. There are no familiar curves or harmonious forms. Instead, this precariously balanced, vertically-structured sculpture plays with a darker, more twisted side of abstraction.</text>

<text>A gravity defiant stack of rounded rocks on a rough granite base. Translating roughly out of Spanish to "Song of the Sea" Cantamar (the Mexican city off the coast of which Davy finds these rocks) is constructed from rocks found along the coast. Davy combines these rocks into a structure that mirrors the waves that shape the rocks. The result is simultaneously organic in form and unnatural in substance. The image Davy creates is one consisting entirely of natural elements that could never be seen in nature. It is a powerful sculpture in this regard, highlighting human dominance over the elements (both the tides and the earth), while also reminding the viewer of the simple beauty that occurs without us.

Davy is a "green" postmodern artist who prioritizes the uniqueness and the non-uniformity of his materials above the resulting piece. His fondness for stones in his art stems from his appreciation for the fact that every stone contains the story of its formation and evidence of its interaction with its environment.</text>

This means that from different angles, due to the differences in lighting on each face, the sculpture takes on a unique form. The canted angle being what it is, the highlights pop and the shadows lay back, giving the viewer a fascinating 2 dimensional image no matter where it is viewed from.

The installation outside of the hospital brings a unique significance to the shape of the sculpture. If it were placed level, the sculpture is also the shape of the medical cross. The piece lies on its side with a multitude of angles to see the cross from, signifying a universal openness for healing.

Antoni Milkowski was a 20th century minimalist sculptor who liked to focus on repetition of patterns and shapes, as well as how negative space impacted a sculpture. In Salem No. 7, the repeating cubic forms, placed at an angle where the negative space can cut into the image shows a true mastery of his style.</text>

<text>A flat figure with upraised arms presents the Rainbow Babies logo to the passing public. The figure is built out of steel plates and coated with mosaic tiles. On both sides of the sculpture. the mosaic tiles depict a single figure made up of a collage of diverse people. So one half of the head on one side has long hair, while the other half of the head has a short haircut swept over the forehead. The clothing and shoes are fragmented and made up of different types, colors, and styles. The point of this disjointed presentation is to allow any child who passes through the doors of the hospital to see themselves as the dream coming true.

This sculpture was designed by Hector Vega and gifted by philanthropists Iris and Mort November in memory of Mort's late daughter Debra Ann. The sculpture is a beacon at the doors of childhood healing. The designs are exemplary of Vega's bright palette and eye for rhythmic geometric patterns, which both serve to uplift the viewer and appeal to the children.</text>

Pastel plates of solid color interrupt the various flesh and hair tones to lend a stylish. colorful air to what would otherwise be a mish-mosh of parts. The woman wears a dress and a business suit to signify both working and stay at home mothers. On the south side of the two-sided statue the baby wears a blue hat labelled "Mort" and on the other side the baby's pink hat is labelled "Iris" both to commemorate the donors of this piece, Iris and Mort November.

This statue serves as a marker for the entrance to the MacDonald's Women's Hospital. It is replete with examples of designer Hector Vega's ability to incorporate bright colors and textural shapes into a work in order to add another dimension of depth. The diverse collection of people represented in the statue allow any woman in need of healing to see herself in the work. The placard notes that it is a celebration of the life of Debra Ann November; Mort's daughter who tragically passed away at the young age of 24. Mort has since then devoted his life to philanthropic charity in her memory and the memory of her late mother as well.</text>

<text>On the peaceful marble promenade that lines the grand Southern entrance of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cupid makes his work known. Two nude figures, a male and a female, revel together in a sensual work from Malvina Hoffman.

The woman wears a simple diadem around her temples and nothing else. She is running, with her left foot just leaving the ground and her right foot in the air. Her left hand reaches across the man's body and grasps his left thigh, while her right hand holds one end of a sheet that flatters behind the two lovers like a parachute. The man is in identical running pose. His left hand holds the other end of the sheet and his right hand is wrapped behind the woman's body, around her waist. Both figures wear broad, lively smiles. The man fixes his bright eyes on his partner's, while she looks up at his hand.

Much of the sexual imagery in the piece is stated: her hand on his thigh, his hand on her waist. But there are much subtler, more covert images as well: the congruent posing of the figures draws them closer together for the viewer. Her hand being where it is while her eyes are fixed on his hand may inform the viewer of her desires. The title also is a reference to sex and orgy. The Bacchanalia was the Roman feast in honor of the god Bacchus, god of wine and revelry. His festival reportedly consisted of rampant sexual frenzy, drunkenness, and general chaos; a night to forget more than a night to remember. This piece may be an image of two lovers engaged in the pleasantries at a Bacchanal festival.

Malvina Hoffman was an American sculptor famous for her life-size bronze, marble, and plaster statues of dancers. The graceful elegance of the figures outside the CMA wonderfully reflect her ability to capture the beauty of movement and the human form. </text>

<text>Poised in a dainty, balletic position, a young boy feeds a panther grapes off the vine. He is slender, but strong. He is nude, save for a fur draping that sprawls across his torso. His arm arches up and over his head, holding the grapes that he feeds to the young panther cub in his other arm.

Hidden in the boy's tousled hair are what looks to be two premature horns and his face is held in a pointed grimace, rather than a soft and caring smile.

It is very likely that this is a sculpture of the Roman wine god Dionysus in his youth. Dionysus is often pictured with bull's horns, which would have been much smaller when he was a boy, the grapes are an obvious connection to the wine that he is lord of, and it is not uncommon to have him represented riding a panther.

Hoffman was known for sculpting dancers in the late nineteenth, early twentieth century, and her talents are certainly on display here. Despite the pose not indicating any great amount of movement, the tension in the boy's body and his balletic form are clearly results of Hoffman's love for the natural beauty of the body in use.</text>

<text>As if the Ronald McDonald House wasn't already a bright enough beacon for the Cleveland Community, Mort and Iris November commissioned artist Hector Vega to install a garden of bold, stained glass tulips in the front. These perennial, colorful blossoms mark the entrance to the Ronald McDonald house, where struggling families can stay together for free. Like something out of a fairy tale, these over-sized, geometric tulips seem to bow and bob in the wind, as you drive past on Euclid Avenue. They are an endless source of wonder for the children who stay at the Ronald McDonald House, and to the parents they are a reminder of the safety and love the House offers.

Hector Vega is a Puerto Rican artist, raised in Cleveland, with an eye for bright colors and a heart for charity. Much of his work has gone to charitable organizations, both local and national, and his singular style is unmistakable.</text>

Each piece is fastened to the others chiefly with nuts and bolts, with a few instances of pressing. The edges are crisp and straight, a mark of engineering and skill, and the pieces used vary in shape, size, and thickness. The "cobbled-together" feeling that comes from the hodge podge of pieces, juxtaposed against the deliberate nature of their technical construction give this piece a unique "Natural-Industrial" look.</text>

<text>Ignacio Ocasio, better known as Doc Oc, was a beloved Professor of Chemistry at CWRU from 1980-2005. He is dressed comfortably and carefree in an untucked, short-sleeved button down, plain slacks, and unassuming dress shoes. His eyes squint out from behind a pair of perfectly round, wire frame glasses, and a broad, infectious smile illuminates his entire face.

He sits with his arm over the back of a sculpted bench, inviting passers by to sit beside him, and let him enjoy their company. Doc Oc was well loved for his energy, zeal, and amiability. From 1980 until his sudden death in 2005, he always learned the names of all his students: a remarkable feat considering the introductory chemistry classes at CWRU sometimes number greater than 500!

According to a gushing memorial article from a CWRU publication at the time of his death: "Doc Oc once reported... 'At the beginning of every year, I visit all of the residence halls one by one, and I schedule a day and time to meet with commuters in my classes... It's important to me to meet all of my students individually.' He was known to stay for several hours in the main lobby to help students with any chemistry problem and other difficulties students might have in adjusting to college life."

And here he still sits, with open ears and an eager grin, greeting everyone on the busy thoroughfare, just as he had done in his lifetime.</text>

<text> What was once an empty, urban lot has been converted into a quiet, inviting, and entirely unique amphitheater space. Richard Fleischmann, the mind behind the Sculpture Garden, was an architect by trade. However, he joined Karl Floyd and Phillip Johnson as the third artist in the Putnam Collection to create a space as a sculptor, rather than an architect.

The sculpture garden consists of three main elements: the agave blue spires that curl out of the ground, the purple aluminum benches, and the stepped-amphitheater, highlighted by a bright green decoration on the bannister.

Concrete forms the general shape and flow of the space. It begins as a rotunda, lined with benches that face inwardly and outwardly. A path then leads up to the rounded theater space. The seats slope up out of nothing and are abruptly cut off by a swooping band of concrete, topped off by an undulating sheet of green metal.

Benches line both the rotunda and the theater. They face out for those who might want to observe and reflect in the space, and they face in for those who might want to bring their friends and talk.

Finally, light blue steel structures shoot out of the surrounding grass like Seussian trees. Each one of them arches outward, creating the feeling of a shallow canopy overhead. The curves in the metal also help shape the space into a spherical one, rather than a circular one.

Between the name "garden", the benches, and the theatrical set-up, an evident goal of the Putnam Sculpture Garden is exploring the dichotomy between audience and performer. We can visit the space and interact with the art either as doers or watchers. We can face out or in on the bench, and we can be on the stage or in the risers. The Garden forces us to make these choice upon entry, perhaps to help us all learn a little more about ourselves.</text>
