Title A name given to the resource Brodbeck Performance Park Description An account of the resource The City of Westwood, Ohio held a competition for a public performance area in the center of town. It was to honor Robert J. Brodbeck who died in 1987. Brodbeck was a long time Westwood volunteer and activist. A one-quarter acre site was made available for that purpose. Landscaping and a sculpture were to be designed to allow for various outdoor public performances and activities. Artist Gene Kangas was selected to design the environment, which consisted of sod-covered earth mounds, trees and cast cement walls and stages. An ancient Native American "mound builders" concept was developed that related to Southwestern Ohio’s historic and prehistoric past. The mounds formed the basis for a flexible contemporary, multi-stage, multi-purpose and relatively maintenance free environment. In addition to the cement and earth mounds, fossil symbols, animal images and tracks appeared in surrounding cast cement pictographs. Three circular stages of graduated sizes formed focal points within interlocking circles. Each raised stage was encircled by an elevated grass covered earth mound, creating a visitor’s "theater-in-the-round." Current plans in 2018 are to redevelop the site into a larger public area. Therefore, the public performance park honoring Robert Brodbeck will no longer exist. Politics change. He is an emeritus university art professor and native of Fairport Harbor. The Finnish Monument and surrounding environment were designed to honor all American families of Finnish heritage. The monument was dedicated in 2003 and has become a popular destination for people visiting northeastern Ohio. Fairport sits on the southern shore of Lake Erie. The small town originally had a significant Finnish population that benefitted from work related to the Great Lakes. The memorial was funded 100% by private donations. It was made of polished red Finnish granite and American stainless steel. The monument features an engraved outline map of Finland, a pair of mated rotating swans (Finnish national nature symbol), and a poem titled “The Finns.” The granite monument stands approximately 16 feet tall. The memorial is surrounded by concentric circles of brick pavers engraved with the names of generous donors, three benches, night lights and birch trees, a familiar Finnish image. The memorial was designed by the artist in consultation with a local committee of Finnish/Americans. Everyone donated time and talent to the project. Detailed drawings were sent to Finland for fabrication by a specialist company. An original poem, engraved on the monument, was written commemorating and celebrating the Finnish journey to America, then and now, ennen ja nyt. Title A name given to the resource Hart Crane Memorial Description An account of the resource The Hart Crane Memorial Sculpture is a unique contemporary monument and public park. This environmental 65-foot-long sculpture commemorates famed 20th century poet Hart Crane, who was born in Northeastern Ohio. Columbus Road Park is located along the Cuyahoga River, which flows directly into Lake Erie. It was redesigned specifically as a home for the Hart Crane Memorial Sculpture. A dominant theme of water and its sights and sounds occurs in Crane’s work. One of his most important poems is titled “The Bridge.” The multi-sectioned Memorial features a large arch or bridge accentuated with selected poetic phrases from Crane’s poetry that refer to water. His words touch on the lives and deaths of those who sailed the Great Lakes. A silhouette of the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald commemorates those lost at sea. The sculpture was commissioned by the Mildred Andrews Fund. This sculpture was originally intended to be installed in Brooklyn under the Brooklyn Bridge, a famous subject of Crane's. It was a pet project of Peter Putnam’s. Peter sent Gene Kangas reference material, a movie and books, to acquaint him with Crane. Unfortunately, Peter Putnam (the commissioner) was killed in a tragic traffic accident before the artwork could be completed. Kangas reached out to Putnam's attorneys in order to finalize Peter’s project and permanently place the work in Cleveland. Three massive curling blue pipes mimic the waves of Lake Erie, just a short distance to the North. These abstracted waves wind and undulate around a Corten steel arch and wedge, which feature the poetic phrases of Hart Crane. The massive arch firmly stands between looming turbulence and calm. It is a passageway connecting the past and future. Gene Kangas explained details about the fabrication of the piece. The ship’s profile was painted with authentic colors provided by the company that built the Edmund Fitzgerald (the Titanic of the Great Lakes that sunk in 1975). The rocking boat-like feature was based on blue-prints provided by the company. Three colors of blue cover sections of tubing. Gene indicated that the Corten pieces, embellished with Crane's words, have a clear and direct association with Crane. However, the winding, wavy forms of the tubes were inspired by Crane's whimsical, winding way of writing. Kangas wanted to reflect the character of Crane’s poetry. Crane’s words are the focal point through which each viewer enters the memorial. River traffic passes the sculpture each day. After 23 years, the sculpture was re-painted in 2018. Sherwin Williams graciously donated the best available commercial paint. The restoration was expertly done by volunteers of a Cleveland painter’s union. This was all accomplished with the direct consultation and supervision of the artist. Since the dedication in 1995, no signage was ever installed to inform visitors of the site’s name or purpose. Title A name given to the resource Dingle Description An account of the resource In Gene Kangas' sculpture, I-beams or other structural forms tend to represent the manufactured world: machinery, architecture, even art, while the curling pipes usually signify the natural organic world: trees, plants and animals. Dingle is a sculpture that explicitly depicts the symbiotic relationship that has developed between Nature and Creation in the modern era. It is an open doorway between worlds, a passageway for people to move through. It was his first public iteration of that idea. A solid steel frame, supports, and is supported by, a vine that rises out of the ground, and a twisting column of pipes that reaches up to the lintel. A pet cat casually walks across the top of the portal structure. Kangas modeled the cat after his neighbor's cat named "Dingle." Description An account of the resource Two life size silhouettes of construction workers wearing hardhats balance a painted steel I-Beam on their heads. A little bird, a common sparrow, rests comfortably getting a free ride on the beam as the workers walk with it. The sparrow is a survivor fearlessly taking advantage of the situation. Lines projected from the bottom of each hard hat intersect at the bird. The leading male figure is a self-portrait of the artist and the figure following was one of his CSU art students. Survivor was created just prior to the commissioning of “Edge” for the Cuyahoga County Justice Center. Originally the three-dimensional sparrow was carved and painted wood. When the artwork was added to the Progressive Collection by Toby Lewis, it was determined the sculpture would be displayed out of doors. At that time, a mold was taken from the wooden form and a bronze replica was cast to serve as a more permanent detail. Later when the artist’s father passed away, the wooden sparrow was buried with him. Reflecting back, those events could alter the potential meaning of Survivor. It was commissioned by Peter Putnam via the Mildred Andrews Fund. The colorful painted environmental metal sculpture was inspired by wooden slat fences called “snow fences,” which are temporary partitions used to prevent snow drifts from buildings. They appear on winter ski slopes, trails, near driveways and city streets. Gene Kangas explained that he liked how snow fences only stopped a specific thing, but they don’t stop all of it. “Just enough so that drifts don’t build up.” Snow fences are passable by animals and humans; in a similar way, Gene wanted Snow Fence to invite passing college students to walk underneath the sculpture. The white birds, like snowflakes, rest on top of the piece. Kangas' work often incorporates structural I-Beams and hard-edged steel elements that interact with twisting, curving green pipes. He said that the pipes symbolize nature while industrial members represent manmade structures. Their relationship in Snow Fence makes an intriguing statement, as it suggests an interdependence: without the vines, leaning slats would collapse, and without the intersecting slats, the vines would fall to the earth. Kangas also noted that in Snow Fence, as in all his sculptures, figures were modeled after real people. The woman with the umbrella was his mother-in-law Dolores Muse, and the dog was his and his wife Linda's first German shepherd Arno. He chose the two figures because when he and his wife got their German Shepherd, it was his mother-in-law’s first encounter with a big dog. In most of her life she’d always had small dogs, but now there was this massive new experience to consider. Kangas was fascinated seeing her adapt and interact with their new family dog. Dolores’ silhouette holds an umbrella, for protection from the elements, while Arno represents protection from other threats. They became friends. Gene Kangas discussed his affinity for silhouettes, which appear in sculptures such as “Terminal” at the Frank Lausche State Office Building or “Door” at CSU. Since his undergrad degree was in printmaking, he’s comfortable experimenting with 2D models and forms. He explained how flat silhouettes create an interesting visual conversation within 3D spaces around them because there are places where they disappear, where their form looks totally different, or where they are obscured by narrow elements. By utilizing human forms that seem to phase in and out of existence in relation to humans, sculptures actively respond to movements and spatial choices of viewers. Gene Kangas has been interested in and been influenced by American Folk Art since 1967. He studied printmaking at Miami University from 1962-1966, and then later pursued a Sculpture MFA at Bowling Green State University from 1966-1968. He was a professor of art at the University of North Carolina and locally at CSU. He was also the first Director of the Finnish Heritage Museum in Fairport, Ohio. Description An account of the resource TERMINAL (21 feet high x 32 feet long x 18 feet wide) is painted steel and includes two life-size figures, a heavy stainless-steel mesh screen, numerous birds and a long "bench" for public use. It was a commission juried by George Sugarman, New York Sculptor; Thomas Messer, Director, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and Richard Fleishman, Architect, Cleveland. Since the bench is located at a transit stop, people often rest there waiting for the next bus. Individuals entering the building must walk through the forest of pipes and beams. It was designed for public interactions. Covering over 32 x 18 square feet of concrete on the west portico of the Frank J. Lausche State Office Building at the corner of Huron and Superior, is Gene Kangas' twisting "Terminal." Terminal consists of a series of winding green vine like pipes soaring 21 feet high, a pair of silhouetted figures framed by a stainless-steel mesh screen and ten silhouetted crows. A Plain Dealer article from November 11, 1979, reported that the standing male figure is a profile of Kangas' younger brother, David, while the seated woman is based on the likeness of his Great Aunt Gertie, who also modelled for the artist. Shortly after the original steel David figure was cut using an optical tracer, a factory worker pirated the pattern and reproduced it in plywood painted black. Others wanted copies. By 1980, David figures leaning against garages, poles and trees began appearing all over northern Ohio. It became popular yard art. Gene Kangas notes that the green pipes represent trees and other natural life swirling around and above us every day. Those are juxtaposed against architectural references. Silhouetted figures are a common theme throughout much of Kangas' work. His profile shadow people allow viewers easy points of entry into the work while retaining a mysterious sense of "otherness" that compels viewers and draws them in. Having a familiar entry point, recognizable and visible from far off, is an inviting way for viewers to begin to interact with a piece. Kangas is aware of the implications. He also uses silhouettes because of the many angles where the figures might completely hide from sight, whether obscured or too narrow to recognize. By having vantage points where figures appear and disappear, different narratives unfold depending on where the viewer is in the environmental space. Terminal is a sculpture that people can walk in and through, with bench seating that invites passers-by to rest a moment and take in the work. It interacts with the pillars of the State Office Building in a pseudo-architectural way that truly helps incorporate this piece into its surroundings. The sculpture has undergone several pathetic re-paintings by the building’s maintenance crew since 1979. They used the wrong colors and did no surface preparation. Flaking paint was simply painted over with no sanding or any loose paint removal. The entire metal sculpture should be sand blasted and brought back to its original character. The building staff’s excuse: “We don’t have a budget for that.” When the sculpture was installed in 1979, a cast bronze identification plaque was attached to one of the columns. Description An account of the resource Rail (20 feet long x 10 feet high x 10 feet wide) was commissioned by Friends of the Akron Public Library. It is painted steel and includes an abstracted fanciful landscape with birds and a cat. Situated in a lovely garden area, a colorful “L” shaped heavy steel rail, symbolic of structural architectural forms, is surrounded by curving metal pipes that seem to rise up from the earth as they grow. Flat cutout birds rest high above the ground, while a very large domestic cat sits intently watching them from below. The rail is bright blue, the organic pipes are green, the birds represent black crows and the cat is dark brown. Rail is located directly outside the children’s glass-walled reading area, and it is a favorite respite with the youngsters. Rail is the third iteration of ideas first publicly expressed in Upper Arlington’s 1975 Dingle sculpture. The Akron Library is planning to repaint the sculpture in the Fall of 2018 as part of a regular maintenance program. Discussions have been held with the artist to ensure the proper colors and type of paint are used to retain the integrity of the artist’s original concept. Title A name given to the resource Huddle [Removed] Description An account of the resource Huddle consisted of two environmental sculptures. One was 36 feet long x 18 feet wide x 7 feet high. The other was 24 feet long x 12 feet wide x 8 feet high. They were commissioned by the Mildred Andrews Fund for donation to Trinity Cathedral. HUDDLE was designed to transform an empty outdoor space in the churchyard into a welcoming public park. The sculptures conveyed ongoing community concerns of the Church. Elements were constructed of Corten and stainless steel. The two environments included life-size and larger figures and animals, a large table with cut-out words expressing world concerns, plus benches, night-lighting, paving and landscaping. Installed outside of Trinity Cathedral, Huddle was commissioned by Peter Putnam in honor of his mother, Mildred Putnam, who was an active community member at the Cathedral. Huddle was one part of a trilogy of sculptures requested by Putnam. A second sculpture called Door sat directly across Euclid Avenue on the CSU campus. A third sculpture was intended to be situated near the CSU Law School. Each was to address different issues. After Putnam’s accidental passing, the third was not built. Huddle featured various figures, animals and birds. A central time capsule chronicled who each figure was modeled after, as well as information about that person. Gene Kangas said that he was inspired for the positions of the seated figures by Rodin's Thinker. And, he mentioned that the pensive pose is exemplary of human nature and the innate desire to seek, understand and search. One of the most remarkable models Kangas has used was named Ralph. Ralph was a homeless gentleman who spent much of his time around the church property. On Kangas' first visit to the Cathedral, he encountered Ralph in the dark alley leading to the Church. Ralph appeared out of the darkness towards Gene. It was a memorable encounter. Ralph always seemed to be on the Church property whenever Kangas surveyed the future installation site and/or met with folks from the Church. One day, Gene decided to use Ralph as a model. He approached Ralph and had a conversation with him. Ralph was long winded and hard to follow, but he agreed to have photos taken. He asked Kangas, "How do you want me to pose?" Kangas responded: "Pensively, with your hand on your chin in a fist." Ralph surprisingly replied, "You mean like Rodin's 'Thinker'?" Ralph’s response stunned Kangas because it was so unexpected. "Yes, exactly like that," he said. Kangas took his photos and created a repetitive silhouette based on Ralph. The image echoes one of Huddle’s many messages: we all enter into a philosophical discussion with the rest of history when we think. We all ask questions and search for answers. Each silhouette of the various thinker figures represents different, sometimes surprising, places that knowledge and understanding come from. It might be a philosopher or scientist; but just as likely, it's a person you might never expect to be acquainted with 19th c. French sculptors. Unfortunately, we all tend to ignore the homeless. They are invisible to us. It is a societal problem. Ralph was reborn in the sculpture 10 times. Huddle was removed sometime later by the Church and sent to the old Doan Electric Building on CSU’s campus, so they could add a wing onto the Cathedral. Then, it was inadvertently destroyed and disposed of when that building was demolished. Ralph’s image and the entire sculpture disappeared. Gene Kangas was not consulted nor given the opportunity to reinstall the piece elsewhere as Peter Putnam would have preferred. Gone with the sculpture is the time capsule. A private message by the artist welded on one of the animals to deceased Peter Putnam read “Thanks Peter Rabbit.” That was lost. And, so was the entire Memorial to his mother Mildred Andrews. The loss is an example of pathetic communication between institutions. It was commissioned by the Mildred Andrews Fund as part two of a trilogy of sculptures for donation to Cleveland State University. DOOR commemorates the family and is constructed of heavy Corten steel and stainless steel. It includes large structural forms and three different generations of multiple race silhouette figures, which are 1-1/2 times life-size along with a big cat and a flock of birds. The large sculpture surrealistically zooms into existence from the prominent mound and presents us with an enigmatic domestic scene. It raises questions. Massive abstracted door frames made from heavy steel channel rise from right to left, one by one, as if growing out of the ground. Perpendicular to the final frame, is an over-sized door frame, complete with an open door. Free standing in the doorway is the silhouette of a woman, Gene’s mother Martha. The woman’s floral dress suggests a symbolic representation of Mother Earth. Beside her, is the silhouette of a little boy holding a baseball mitt and bat. The boy, Pepi Stuart Jr., was modeled after the son of one of Kangas' long-time basketball friends. Behind both of them, on a perpendicular plane, a man in a trench coat and briefcase walks to work. His name is Omar Parker. Together, they represent the human family. Dingle the cat rests on top of the doorway and is the same cat seen in Kangas' other works. Dingle stares at the birds dotting structural beams rising out of the ground. Door is the second iteration of ideas presented in Upper Arlington’s Dingle. Kangas noted that the introduction of both domestic and wild animals into a piece along-side humans creates a series of complex and interesting relationships ie. pet/master, predator/prey, etc. One reason that Kangas often uses silhouettes in his pieces, is that by necessity, there are many angles where important elements of the work completely vanish. When looking at the mother and son head on, it's nearly impossible to see the man. And when looking at the man in profile, the rest of the family becomes thin, narrow and obscured by the doorway. Gene said that basing what you can see on what you are focusing on helps craft a narrative for each of the characters, and it expands their relationship in a unique way that cannot be as well executed otherwise. At the time of the installation, Door was protested by some who felt the domestic scene presented was "placing women in traditional gender roles." They took the artist’s written explanation out of context. Actually, the figures represent different generations, different races, with different expectations. Things change through time. Kangas stated that the sculpture isn't a commentary on what should or shouldn't happen, rather he wanted to illustrate a slice of some traditional families, where the father worked, the child played, and mother was at home. Each has choices. Today the mother is free to come or go. She is in an open doorway, not attached, independent but part of a greater whole. The open door is between inside and outside, public and private, home and other, today and tomorrow. It is a connecting portal, a passageway forward through time. You can’t go back.
