The center portion of the memorial features four bronze plaques (two on the front, two on the back) with the names of the battles in which American forces participated in France (Argonne, Maine, Scoissons, and St. Mihiel). There are two additional bronze plaques (one on either side of the memorial) designed with an eagle and shield at the top and lists of the names of the Fayette County soldiers who died during the war. This memorial, dedicated on November 11, 1927, replaced a previous memorial arch that had originally been dedicated in 1919. The memorial incorporates a number of commemorative elements, including a bronze sculpture of a female firefighter carrying a small child and several memorial benches in honor of specific men and women. At the center of the memorial is a concrete vault containing a time capsule. On top of the vault is a bell that was once on the riverboat Reuben Springer; this bell served as the Loveland firefighters' alarm bell until 1934. There are four pillars with additional memorial plaques honoring fallen responders, including those who lost their lives in a 2007 fire in Charleston, SC. Richardson monument Description An account of the resource This work is constructed of 51 pieces of pink granite salvaged from the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce building located at the corner of 4th and Vine Streets. The original building had been designed by renowned architect H. H. Richardson (in whose honor this subsequent work was created) and stood for 22 years before it was destroyed by fire in 1911. A competition was held in 1967 (sponsored by the University of Cincinnati's Design, Art, Architecture and Planning school) for the design of this memorial using the rediscovered granite blocks. Stephen Carter's design won, and the work was constructed in 1972. The original bronze plaque was stolen within a year of the work's installation, but a replacement plaque was cast for its 40th anniversary. Title A name given to the resource Kettering Historical Marker Sign Description An account of the resource The Ohio Historical Marker sign reads: Charles Franklin Kettering A pioneer in automotive innovation, Charles Franklin Kettering (1877-1958) was born three miles north of Loudonville. He attended local schools and graduated from Ohio State University in 1904. He organized the Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company (Delco) in 1909, which later became a part of General Motors (GM). "Boss Ket" served as vice-president of research for GM 1920-1947 and held over 140 patents (including four-wheel brakes, safety glass, and "ethyl" gasoline), achieving his greatest fame for an all-electric starting, lighting, and ignition system. The electric starter debuted on the 1912 Cadillac and was soon available on all cars, helping to popularize them with women. Created by local monument makers, the Cross Brothers, the memorial was dedicated by the Athens High School class of 1924. It's intended to honor all of the unknown dead laid to rest in the cemetery during the previous century. Known as the "Weeping Angel," the statue is a popular source of ghost and paranormal stories. Title A name given to the resource Iwo Jima Memorial Contributor An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource SR IS1 Sara Ross Description An account of the resource Part of a larger monument square, this granite Iwo Jima memorial was dedicated in 2008 to all U.S. armed forces who served in the conflict. The American Flag that flies above the monument appears to be held by the engraved soldiers, making the memorial a 3-D rendition of Joe Rosenthal's iconic photograph of U.S. Marines raising a flag above Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. The back, which was inscribed in 2018 by Robert Howard of Quality Monument Service, contains the names of local service members from the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II, who were not on the nearby memorial wall of 800 names. There are four pictures in a section called "The Four Chaplains," in honor of the service members who stayed behind on the sinking USAT Dorchester, which had been hit by a German torpedo, in order to allow others to survive. New Straitsville's Monument Square is wheelchair-accessible and easily visible. It's located next to the local library, which has parking.
