Title A name given to the resource Captain Isaac Newton Hook's Tomb Contributor An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource SR IS1 Sara Ross Identifier An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context 1904 Description An account of the resource This is the highly-unusual above-ground tomb of Captain Isaac Newton Hook, which he designed and created himself, completing it shortly before his death in 1906. There are rudimentary images carved all around the now-ivory-colored structure, which has reportedly been recently whitewashed, as historical images show it a more natural grey. (See historical photos attached to record.) One side shows a man holding a gun and shooting a rabbit, while the other depicts a man rowing a canoe. The back of the tomb has the word "pioneer" engraved above a man with an ax in his hand and a dog leaping at his feet. The front has the image of an anchor encircled, as well as "I.N. Hook," with a star at the beginning and a cross cutting off the "k" at the end. There is also a spot marked "FLOOD [arrow symbol] 1898," which is discussed below. The stone plaque cemented into the front holds his controversial views on religion, death, and oddly, the 15th Amendment, which had given all [male] American citizens the right to vote regardless of race or former slave status. The popular legend associated with this tomb is that Hook's wife informed him she would be the first to dance on his grave when he died, so he built it with a rounded top and a sharp spire to prevent her from doing so. It's unclear what happened to the spire shown in one of the photos, but as seen in one of the other images, there used to be a small boat on a little platform affixed to the rounded top, intended to take him away in the event of a flood. (It's unclear whether he meant while he was alive or postmortem.) There was, in fact, a flood in 1913, which destroyed the nearby brick church and road, and it actually carried the boat away, never to be found. Hook, who had become a river pilot at the age of 10, had tried to take preventive measures against flooding, as he didn't want to have water run over his burial spot. There is a marking of the 1898 flood water level on the front of his tomb, right in the middle. Above the line is a coffin-shaped entrance, currently covered by his grave marker, with the thought being that, when he died, his body could be entered into the tomb right above the waterline. (See the historical photo attached to the record for an image of the tomb as it was first built, prior to Hook's death, where the entrance is uncovered and the otherwise-unchanged stone grave marker has no death date.) His wish did not come true, however, and his tomb was submerged in the 1913 flood, although it survived. Accessibility notes: Following the 1913 flood, the road had to be moved to the other side of the cemetery, away from the Muskingum River. This places the graveyard far back from the main road, at the end of a lane running between a corn field and a wooded area. The historical marker sits parallel to the highway and blends in with the surrounding tree trunks, making it, the cemetery, and the church difficult to see, especially when going the speed limit headed south from McConnelsville. If you reach Stockport, you've gone too far south, as it's about two miles north from that city. It's recommended that cars be parked at the second historical marker in front of the graveyard entrance gate, and visitors can then walk back to the highly-visible tomb and church. There is no clear path, and the ground has a tendency to get muddy, as it's steps away from the Muskingum River. Most maps and sites list the location as the [Old] Brick Church Cemetery. This work honors the history of the "South Bridge" and Athens. It depicts the Hocking River, which once flowed under the bridge prior to rechanneling in the 1960s and 70s, the 1870 bridge that was the first incarnation of five, local wildlife including species that are now endangered, and the Athens Asylum, now called The Ridges. It also includes marks on the upper left side indicating the height floodwaters reached in various years, prior to the rerouting of the river. The sculpture was commissioned by Marion Technical College as part of the Honor Grove, honoring MTC employees with 25 years or more of service. The artist, Robert J. Huff, chose the 25 stone columns to represent the years of service and stated that "The emerging spherical shape of the stones' top edges represent the processes of development and change," and that the arrangement of the columns in a grid pattern "refers to the scientific process and rational systems of thought." Bricks etched with the names of the honored employees form a circle around the sculpture. Title A name given to the resource Input Description An account of the resource Input is a public art installation in Bicentennial Park at Ohio University by renowned artist and daughter of an Ohio University professor emerita mother and an OU dean emeritus father, Maya Lin. It is best viewed from above. From that angle, it's intended to look like a computer punch card, partially inspired by the OU computer programming classes Lin took in high school. It consists of 21 grassy rectangles, with concrete borders, some built into the ground and some raised above it. Each rectangle measures 24 by 14 feet. 15 of them are depressed 16 inches into the ground, and the remaining six rise 16 inches above ground level. Words and phrases are scattered throughout, in seemingly random order. Maya Lin's brother, Tan Lin, composed the verses as a part of a piece about growing up in Athens with university professor parents, which is why some of the words refer to well-known Ohio University or Athens spots. The rectangles are intended to act as spots for people to relax or study. They initially proved hazardous because students would accidentally step into them at night. Lighting was installed in 2019, making the area safer and more noticeable at night. The piece continues to receive mixed reactions, especially in terms of upkeep and lack of awareness that it is a usable space. Input was dedicated in 2004 as part of OU's bicentennial. The front has a relief of a wagon wheel on one side and of an auto tire on the other with an eight-inch fragment cube of the original first concrete street in America (Court Avenue in Bellefontaine, Ohio) in the center. The monument was part of a large Golden Jubilee celebration of the first concrete street in American held in Bellefonatine in 1941. The sculpture also functions as a time capsule, with an 18-inch air-tight copper tube embedded in the monument that is filled with various records and photographs that detail the planning of the Jubilee. The artist, Christina Grote, wrote of the piece, "I originally conceived this throne as part of a larger project – a garden designed to provide a place that allow people to be present to the beauty of nature and natural sound in a quiet, contemplative way, to feel a sense of oneness or connection with nature and the elements, free from ordinary distractions. I have titled the throne “Listen” to encourage visitors to take time to sit quietly and reflect on the beauty of nature and the joy of being alive. Being in a peaceful place, listening to the sounds of the natural world can bring us into a state of inner calm and a sense of connection with ourselves and the world around us. Those who truly feel this connection with nature treat it with love and care. For children, “Listen” provides a playful focus, a place to sit for a moment and think about the earth as their mother and the trees and animals as their relatives. As the Native Americans say, everything is connected. Children can also be inspired by the throne to think about their place in nature and what their contribution might be to help the world. I included birds on the piece purposefully as in ancient times people felt that birds are messengers from the unseen world to ours. The unseen world can include our own essential self, that part of us that is often drowned out by the cares and concerns of daily life. The hummingbird on the back is a symbol of endurance and overcoming obstacles, as well as joy. In Native American culture, a hummingbird symbolizes timeless joy and the Nectar of Life. It is a symbol for accomplishing that which seems impossible. The hummingbird teaches us how to find the miracle of joyful living from our own life circumstances and harmony within ourselves, with others and with the earth." Title A name given to the resource Brodbeck Performance Park Description An account of the resource The City of Westwood, Ohio held a competition for a public performance area in the center of town. It was to honor Robert J. Brodbeck who died in 1987. Brodbeck was a long time Westwood volunteer and activist. A one-quarter acre site was made available for that purpose. Landscaping and a sculpture were to be designed to allow for various outdoor public performances and activities. Artist Gene Kangas was selected to design the environment, which consisted of sod-covered earth mounds, trees and cast cement walls and stages. An ancient Native American "mound builders" concept was developed that related to Southwestern Ohio’s historic and prehistoric past. The mounds formed the basis for a flexible contemporary, multi-stage, multi-purpose and relatively maintenance free environment. In addition to the cement and earth mounds, fossil symbols, animal images and tracks appeared in surrounding cast cement pictographs. Three circular stages of graduated sizes formed focal points within interlocking circles. Each raised stage was encircled by an elevated grass covered earth mound, creating a visitor’s "theater-in-the-round." Current plans in 2018 are to redevelop the site into a larger public area. Therefore, the public performance park honoring Robert Brodbeck will no longer exist. Politics change. Title A name given to the resource Field of Corn Description An account of the resource Field of Corn (with Osage Orange Trees) is a concise example of one of Cochran's outdoor commissions. The site chosen for the piece by Dublin, OH was a large traffic island, cut off from neighborhood subdivisions by two roads. In researching the site, Cochran discovered that the land had been farmed fo 1800 years and had been owned by a leading corn hybridizer in the 1940s and '50s. To honor this endeavor, Cochran placed 109 concrete ears of corn, each approximately six feet high, into the ground in even rows. The resulting piece refers naturally to a cornfield, but closely resembles the identical white grave markers in Arlington National Cemetery. Cochran finished the piece by creating a row of text panels that explain the history of corn production and set them among Osage orange trees that existed as part of the site and were traditionally used as windbreaks and field dividers. Title A name given to the resource Soliloquy on the Origin of Aboriginal Abstractions Description An account of the resource As written by the artist, "The sculpture “Soliloquy on the Origin of Aboriginal Abstractions” was commissioned by the City of Toledo, Ohio in 1975, and unveiled in 1976 for the national bicentennial observance. My initial inspiration to create this work of art evolved from the Toledo American Bicentennial Commission’s theme, “Heritage ’76: A Re-examination of Our Origins, Values, and Principles.” The images in the sandblasted frieze wall reliefs are abstract primal shapes derived and improvised from aboriginal cultures of The Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia –New Guinea, and Australia, combined to form and develop a Post-Modern motif that speaks to the origins of America’s diverse civilization." Using a 3M rubber stencil to protect the wall and then cutting out the designs to expose the bare concrete, a sandblast machine with 220-pound per square inch of pressure was used to carve the reliefs into the wall. 22 tons of sand was used during the process and the recessed stone was tinted a translucent charcoal hue. The stencil was removed and the walls were washed with an oleum solvent to remove the rubber cement solution that was used to adhere the stencil. The entire concrete wall system was then sealed with a silicon sealer. JD Jackson says, “In conclusion I can say that it has been an arduous task, but totally fulfilling.” In a narrative that Jackson wrote at the time of creation he says this: “It is September 1st, 1975. I am standing on the corner of Indiana and Hawley streets in Toledo, Ohio, a new building is in its final stage of completion. I am looking at the large 30’ x 30’ walls that greet me as I enter the building. On these lonesome walls I will create movement, abstract form, and poetry. I have decided to do a relief on the solid poured concrete wall. I will recess the concrete one-half to one inch, and the method will be sandblasting. I have been preparing myself for this challenge for months by studying the techniques of sandblasting and by carefully planning the execution of the sandblast process. My design has been tailored for total accuracy as there is no room for error in a sandblast relief. I must take the architect into consideration, for my objective is to make a mural that is complimentary to the architectural structure, but that is as free as the limits of structure permit. I am conscious of the world at large, realizing that all roads on this planet lead to Indiana and Hawley streets. I will address myself to the world community and speak the visual language with it in mind. It is November 3rd, 1976. A year has gone by. I have worked nine hours each day. I have lost 20 pounds. Title A name given to the resource Our Lady of Guadalupe Description An account of the resource Pictures taken by Joey Powell This statue is a replica of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that appears on the Tilma of Juan Diego that is on display at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, Mexico. The construction consists of a skeleton of three quarter inch fusion bonded epoxy coated rebar steel bent into shapes and welded to form the large work. The work was done in sections in a workshop with each section being stacked on the previous section for alignment. The sections were covered with metal lath to act as a base for the cement application and then stacked to the fifty foot height, bolted and welded in place. The cement was sprayed on with a concrete gun and hand troweled to form the detail. The face of the Virgin and the angel's faces were cast and bolted in place along with the hands of the Virgin and the hands of the angel. These pieces were painted after installation. The cement was allowed to cure for one year and then about four hundred thousand ceramic tile were attached and grouted in place. Stainless steel sun rays were manufactured and installed on the rear of the sculpture with a buffed texture to capture light. The weight of the sections is passed to steel pipe that extend from the base to the top of the inside of the statue. A ladder and a series of platforms are part of the internal construction to allow for inspection and maintenance of the statue. The base of the statue is four two foot diameter holes drilled to twenty-one feet, added rebar cages and then filled with ten yard of concrete. The pour was stopped two feet below grade and a fourteen by fourteen foot hole was excavated on top of the poured posts and the posts rebar was tied into two rebar mats covering the hole. A ten thousand pound steel plate two inches thick containing twenty-four eighteen inch long, inch and a half diameter J bolts, was placed on four embedded jacks and leveled, then twenty yards of concrete was poured to tie the base to the poured posts. The bottom section of the statue is welded to the steel base plate. Next to the sculpture there is a pond that is encircled by poles with white spheres on top. The spheres are interlocked by a series of chains and end at a crucifix to look like a rosary. Description An account of the resource A 25 foot freedom monument with 15 foot stainless steel projections pointing skyward in a giant "V" with a lateral cor-ten steel crossing through both stainless projections situated on a five foot base faced with black granite. Two walkways (cement) up to the memorial with 2 steps and 20 foot landing with two alluminum handrails, one at each end of landing and the Bicentennial logo. Between the two walkways leading up to the memorial consisting of stainless steel rising 6" above grade filled with red, white and blue stones. Work was designed by artist Bill Haupt.
