The center portion of the memorial features four bronze plaques (two on the front, two on the back) with the names of the battles in which American forces participated in France (Argonne, Maine, Scoissons, and St. Mihiel). There are two additional bronze plaques (one on either side of the memorial) designed with an eagle and shield at the top and lists of the names of the Fayette County soldiers who died during the war. The statue has been removed at least twice for maintenance and repairs, most recently in 2009 when she was cleaned and painted gold. The front has a relief of a wagon wheel on one side and of an auto tire on the other with an eight-inch fragment cube of the original first concrete street in America (Court Avenue in Bellefontaine, Ohio) in the center. The monument was part of a large Golden Jubilee celebration of the first concrete street in American held in Bellefonatine in 1941. The sculpture also functions as a time capsule, with an 18-inch air-tight copper tube embedded in the monument that is filled with various records and photographs that detail the planning of the Jubilee. His left elbow rests on his left knee and his face is held by the left hand, which covers his eyes. A folded flag is held under the right arm. The word "Union" is on the collar of his shirt. The base of the statue is a stone hexagon. Scott is a 31 foot steel gavel and sound block located in the south reflecting pool outside the Supreme Court of Ohio. The sculpture is constructed entirely from stainless steel and it is the largest gavel in the world. “Gavel” was commissioned in 2008 by the Ohio State Bar Association for the price of $200,000. Scott's massive rendition of the symbolic tool of the judge is charged with notions about the omnipotence of the judiciary. Early renderings of the artwork appear to include the phrase “NO JUSTICE NO PEACE” inscribed along the base of the sound block. The rallying cry was first documented in 1986 at the protest against the murder of Michael Griffith, a 23 year old Trinidadian man who was run over after a white mob attacked him and his friends. The phrase is still commonly used at protests against racial injustice to this day and could have been placed on the sound block to function as a reminder to those in power of their responsibility to rule justly. Although the phrase is absent from the finished piece, the overwhelming gavel made by an African American man continues to serve as a symbolic reminder to the Ohio Supreme Court to uphold justice for all and protect society’s most vulnerable. Andrew F. Scott is a multimedia artist and sculptor whose work falls at the intersection of digital fabrication technologies, traditional fine arts practices, and collective cultural ideals. He finds much of his inspiration from African American art and culture and views his work through the spirit of “Sankofa,” a word in the Twi language of Ghana that literally translates to "go back and get it." Metaphorically, “Sankofa” expresses the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained in the past and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress. “Through synthesis, manipulation, and abstraction, [Scott] reinterpret[s] these traditional forms and ideas and bring[s] them into a modern context.” Scott’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Ranney, an Ohio Supreme Court Justice, seated outside the Cuyahoge County Courthouse. He wears judicial robes and carries a document in his left hand. He is looking straight forward, but because of his high pedestal, his sightline is above the viewer. Ranney's face is soft and friendly, and his posture is relaxed. Ranney was an early Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court who possessed a brilliant legal and political mind. His hand in the reforms of the Ohio constitution in 1892 had a monumental impact. He ended up resigning as Supreme Court Justice in order to return to his private practice in Cleveland, where he later died. He is wearing judicial robes, seated in an ornate chair. His hands rest on the arms of the chair, curled over front. His gaze is attentive, relaxed, downwards, towards the viewers, as if he is presiding over the lives of all passers-by. The statue is fittingly outside of the Cuyahoga County Courthouse, as a reminder of his importance to the American judicial branch and legal system. John Marshall was the fourth Chief Supreme Court justice and is largely responsible for making the Judicial branch equal to the Executive and Legislative branches thanks to his groundbreaking use of Judicial Review. Title A name given to the resource Lady Justice, Union County Courthouse Description An account of the resource A ten-foot tall statue of lady justice that stands on top of the cupola of the Union County Courthouse in Marysville, Ohio. The statue was part of the building's original design by architect D.W. Gibbs, and specifications for the building design held by the Union County Archives state that the figure of "Justice" was "to be made of zinc, correct in form in every particular, artistically modeled." The statue held scales in her outstretched left hand and gripped the hilt of a sword that was held facing down on her right side. The scales blew off as the remnants of Hurricane Ike passed over in September of 2008, and the derecho that hit Ohio in June of 2012 took the left arm off completely. It was subsequently noticed that the sword was missing as well. Both the arm and sword were found on the roof of the courthouse and repairs to the statue were included with the necessary repairs to the courthouse in 2013.
