On A Pedestal and Off The Wall
The Third Annual Exhibition of
Small Sculpture from the Region
On A Pedestal Exhibition Image

March 16 - April 21, 2007

With 27 works of art by 21 sculptors of this geographical region, On A Pedestal and Off The Wall aptly represents the breadth of exploration by contemporary sculptors expressed in an unfettered array of media – including porcelain, feathers and concrete, glass, cardboard, wax and bronze, variously combined household items, silicone and human hair, a video of a performance piece, and an installation. The sculpture addresses international politics, the natural world, social interaction, technology, personal demons, and the formal concerns of sculpture as an art form.

With the call for artists opened for the first time beyond Ohio to its adjoining states, sculpture by artists from Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania - students, early career artists, and well-established professionals - are presented in the gallery of The Sculpture Center. Included in the exhibition are the artworks of Jake Beckman (Cleveland Heights, OH), Kate Budd (Akron, OH), Case Conover (Oberlin, OH), Rene Culler (Cleveland, OH), Ilena Finocchi (North Lima, OH), Christine French (North East, PA), Abigail Good (Seven Hills, OH), Dana Goodman (Huntington, IN), Artemis Herber (Cleveland Heights, OH), Nichole Herzing (Harrisburg, PA), Alex Hibbitt (Athens, OH), Lauren Kalman (Cleveland Heights, OH), Greg Martin (South Euclid, OH), Janet Mikolajczyk (Hudson, OH), Greg Mueller (Bowling Green, OH), J. Derek O'Brien (Mentor, OH), Leslie Pontz (Philadelphia, PA), Mark Soppeland (Akron, OH), Mark VanFleet (Columbus, OH), Donna Webb (Akron, OH), and Dietrich Wegner (Edinboro, PA).

The juror Don Harvey, eminent Cleveland arts educator and artist, writes in the accompanying brochure, “With the ongoing art world interest in the grand gesture –installation art in the international biennials, large public art projects, art works as spectacle, sculpture cum architecture – some adjustment can be necessary to fully appreciate an exhibition of small-scale sculpture; an adjustment from monumentality to intimacy, from the power possible in expansion to that possible in condensation. The materials and tools of the sculptor open into a different range at this scale too – a fragility of material is possible and with it a different level of connotation and content.”

About Don Harvey, Juror
Working in Cleveland, Ohio, Don Harvey has, over the past 20 years, been active in a variety of ways in helping build connections between the visual arts and a community going through the process of redefining itself, including serving as founding board president of the Committee for Public Art (now named Cleveland Public Art). His art has addressed these concerns in a long investigation of the changing industrial landscape along the city’s waterfront, and in considerations of what constitutes public, urban space in a modern city. His work is in the collections of The Cleveland Museum of Art, OH; Akron Art Museum, OH; Mint Museum, Charlotte, N.C.; Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, MI; The International Spy Museum, Washington, DC; Progressive Corporation, Cleveland, OH; Goodrich Corporation, Charlotte, NC; and many others. He is Emeritus Professor of Art at the Myers School of Art of The University of Akron as well as Visiting Professor of Art at Oberlin College.
