Voss Finn: Declared Excess

March 19 - April 16, 2004

About
The Sculpture Center announces an exhibition by Voss Finn, titled Declared Excess, from Mar. 19 through Apr. 16, 2004. The free, public reception with the artist is Friday, Mar. 19, from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Finn departs from figurative sculpting with Declared Excess, his show of contraptions fashioned from vintage wooden machine tool patterns and found objects. Finn discovered a large number of discarded machine tool patterns in the industrial building where his studio is located in the North Side area of Cincinnati, which once housed a machine company. His research showed that the patterns dated from the 1930’s to 1940’s, and were handcrafted in rosewood and cherry wood. Finn strives to honor the craftsmanship - resurrecting the integrity of these patterns by assembling them into unique shapes, and adding colorful paints and embellishments, thereby creating structural forms with fantastical personalities.
