THE SCULPTURE CENTER AFTER THE PEDESTAL/the 6th annual of small sculpture from the region call for artists through April 18 at midnight Notification Date No later than May 11 Exhibition Dates June 11 – July 31 All artists from Ohio, its contiguous states (Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania), and Ontario, Canada, working in all media of sculpture, including installation, conceptual work, and performance video if object based, are eligible. Juror Astria Suparak is the director of Carnegie Mellon University's Miller Gallery, where she curated the touring survey exhibition Keep It Slick: Infiltrating Capitalism with the Yes Men andYour Town, Inc.: Big Box Reuse with Julia Christensen and co-organized the Contestational Cartographies Symposium. She has curated exhibitions, screenings, and events at The Kitchen in New York, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Eyebeam, Anthology Film Archives, P.S.1, FotoFest Biennial in Houston, Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico City, Participant Inc., Yale University, and The Liverpool Biennial, in addition to numerous alternative spaces. Over the last ten years she has presented 300 shows in ten countries. Suparak was the director of the media series at Pratt Institute from 1997 to 2000 and of Syracuse University's Warehouse Gallery from 2006-2007. Suparak’s drawings have been published in feminist journal LTTR, photo essay book I NY, British art magazine Black Diamond, and Graffiti Women: Street Art from Five Continents. Her writing has appeared in NY Arts, The Independent, and Heeb, and in the upcoming anthologies Live Cinema: A Contemporary Reader and A Microcinema Primer: A Brief History of Small Cinemas. She has advised various art organizations and served on juries, boards, and panels, including Creative Capital, ReNew Media, IMPAKT, the Aurora Picture Show, and the New York Underground Film Festival. Her curatorial work is included in the collections of institutions including the Orange County Museum of Art, University of California, San Diego, FACT Centre, and Northwestern University. The sculpture may be for exhibition on a pedestal, the wall, or floor or for ceiling suspension if very lightweight. Artists may submit up to 3 artworks, created within the last 3 years and not previously exhibited in Northeast Ohio. All artwork will be exhibited indoors. Artists are responsible for shipping and difficult installation. The Sculpture Center insures all artwork while on its premises. Electronic application is required by midnight Sunday, April 18.
